Miami vs Nebraska 2002 What to Watch:

It seemed certain that Miami and Nebraska would face off in the Rose Bowl as the regular season came to a close. With non-BCS Brigham Young the only other undefeated team, Nebraska's 20-10 victory over Oklahoma, which had not yet lost, in late October put the Huskers and 'Canes at the top of the rankings for the next four weeks.

The Huskers needed to defeat two-loss Colorado at Boulder to secure the Big 12 North going into their final regular-season game. But in a game that wasn't even that close, the Buffaloes disregarded the rules and crushed Nebraska, 62-36. Nebraska's hopes of winning the national championship appeared to be dashed as it fell to No. 6 in the standings.

Following Nebraska's defeat, Florida secured the crucial No. 2 position. To guarantee a spot in the SEC Championship Game, the Gators only needed to defeat Tennessee. The 2001 Florida-Tennessee game, which is usually played in the third week of September, was postponed due to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Steve Spurrier's final regular-season game as coach of the Gators ended with the Vols surprising Florida with a 34-32 victory.

After No. 4 Colorado defeated No. 3 Texas in the Big 12 championship game, Tennessee's victory shot them up from No. 6 to No. 2 in the BCS rankings. For the Vols to qualify for their second BCS title game appearance in four years, they simply needed to defeat three-loss LSU in the SEC title game.

Meanwhile, Oregon was left fuming on the sidelines. The Ducks were ranked third in both polls after their lone loss to Stanford, who had two losses. They trailed two-loss Colorado, who had lost to Fresno State and Texas during the regular season, and were only rated No. 5 in the BCS standings.
