Ohio State Buckeyes vs Oregon Ducks 2015 What to Watch:

With an unexpected matchup between the Oregon Ducks and Ohio State Buckeyes, the first College Football Playoff produced what looks to be an exciting national championship game.

These two teams most definitely merited a spot in the season finale. Ohio State defeated the top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide, while Oregon defeated Jameis Winston and the Florida State Seminoles, the reigning champions. This seems to be the case. The playoff format was created to guarantee that the two most worthy teams in the country faced off in the championship game.

When these two collegiate football powerhouses square battle on the biggest platform, what can possibly happen? Let's first look at the game's full viewing data and updated odds before we do any analysis and forecast the response to that question.

This is as even as it gets going into a national championship game. The offenses of the Ducks and Buckeyes, which rank second and sixth in scoring, respectively, are among the finest in the country. Additionally, both teams have underappreciated defenses; Oregon gives up 22.3 points per game on average, while Ohio State gives up 22.1.

Although this game appears to be almost unforeseeable on paper, a few important players, matchups, and strategies will ultimately determine the outcome.

Marcus Mariota, the Heisman-winning quarterback, is the key to the Ducks' success. In the Rose Bowl game against the Seminoles, he once again demonstrated his explosive playmaking skills by completing 26 of his 36 passing attempts for 338 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. He also added 62 rushing yards and another touchdown.

He only had three interceptions this season, which is impressive given that he will be against an Ohio State defense that has recorded 24 interceptions thus far, including three in the Sugar Bowl against the usually reliable Blake Sims.

In order to maintain Mariota's passing lanes, Oregon needs to establish the run, and Thomas Tyner's comeback will play a significant role in this. In the Rose Bowl, Tyner carried 13 times for 124 yards and two touchdowns, providing Royce Freeman with a nice complement. That was his first move since a game against Utah in November, and he undoubtedly gave a successful attacking attack a new dimension.

This season, Ohio State has given up 24 rushing touchdowns and an average of 142.0 yards per game, placing them 34th against the run. Starting Tyner and Freeman early will slow down the 43-sack-averaging Buckeyes pass rush and create space against the 16th-ranked pass defense in the country.

Ohio State's offensive line needs to be led by quarterback Cardale Jones and running back Ezekiel Elliott while the Buckeyes defense tries to limit an extremely potent Oregon offense.

Against a strong Alabama defense, Jones started for the second time in his career and completed 18 of his 35 passing attempts for 243 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Though not bad, those figures are insufficient to defeat Mariota and company.

Jones will undoubtedly get more chances against Oregon's pass defense, which is rated 108th, but the Ducks have recently performed well in that area. Winston only completed 29 of his 45 passes for one score and one interception in the Rose Bowl, despite throwing for 348 yards. In the Pac-12 championship, Oregon also dominated Arizona's passing game.

Elliott can help with this. With 20 carries for 220 yards and two touchdowns against Wisconsin in the Big Ten championship and another 20 rushes for 230 yards and two touchdowns against Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, the sophomore ball-carrier has been stepping up in crucial games. That's impressive.
