Akron Zips vs #2 Ohio State Buckeyes What to Watch:
The 2024 season begins on Saturday when the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes play the Akron Zips at home on CBS and Paramount+. After finishing 10-2 overall and 8-1 in conference play this season—only surpassed by the unbeaten Michigan Wolverines—the Buckeyes are hoping to dominate the Big Ten. The Zips, meanwhile, finished the season 2-10 and have only ever triumphed over Ohio State.
At Columbus' Ohio Stadium, kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET. According to SportsLine's most recent Ohio State vs. Akron odds, the Buckeyes are 48.5-point favorites, down from their initial -50 position.
The Zips might still prevent Ohio State from covering on Saturday, even though they haven't beaten the Buckeyes since 1894. Last season, including in a Week 4 game against Indiana where the Zips clung on for an overtime loss, they went 5-5-1 against the spread.
Ben Finley, a former Cal quarterback with a 110.8 passer rating for the Bears the previous season, also helps Akron at center. Running back Charles Kellom and wide receiver Adrian Norton, who are taking on heavy workloads after their predecessors left for the NFL, will assist him offensively.
With Marvin Harrison Jr. preparing for his first NFL season with the Arizona Cardinals and Kyle McCord joining a new squad, Ohio State's offense will look different this year. But Will Howard, who just had a career-best season at Kansas State, should have plenty of chances to lead the attack against an Akron defense that finished 123rd in turnovers forced (11) and 68th in average points per game (28.0). Quinshon Judkins, a transfer from Ole Miss, joins running back TreVeyon Henderson to give the Buckeyes one of the top backfield tandems in the country.
Caleb Downs, a former Alabama and All-American safety, will join the Buckeyes, who have a number of starting defenders returning for the 2024 campaign. The Buckeyes will have a way to cover this enormous amount since the offense is nearly guaranteed to record a high number in this game and OSU's defense can keep Akron to a score or two.
