Alabama will play Michigan for a berth in the national championship on January 1st, marking the formal start of the 2023–24 College Football Playoff at the Rose Bowl. Coach Jim Harbaugh's squad advanced to the No. 1 seed in the playoffs when the Wolverines defeated Iowa in the Big Ten Championship to finish the regular season with a perfect 13-0 record. After suffering an early defeat against Texas, the Crimson Tide went on to win 11 straight games, including a 27–24 triumph over Georgia in the SEC Championship, to secure the fourth seed in the CFB Playoffs.

Following Harbaugh's two bans, including a three-game punishment for sign-stealing, Michigan has been embroiled in controversy in 2023. Nonetheless, the Wolverines outscored opponents 477 to 123 this season, dominating for the most part. Michigan has qualified for the four-team playoffs for the third year in a row with its CFB Playoff berth. The Wolverines are 0–2 in the semifinals, though. For a few seasons, this may be Harbaugh's greatest chance to win a national championship because of the team's veteran roster and multiple players who are in their final year of eligibility.

There were many questions following an early-season loss to Texas about whether coach Nick Saban's team was experiencing a little setback or if there were indications of more serious issues. 

With 11 consecutive victories, including triumphs over LSU, Tennessee, Ole Miss, and Georgia, the Crimson Tide provided answers to those queries and advanced to the CFB Playoffs. A stellar defense and the rise of quarterback Jalen Milroe spearheaded the team's run to the SEC championship. 

There have been five prior meetings between Michigan and Alabama, four of which have occurred during the postseason. The Crimson Tide are 9-4 in the four-team system, whereas the Wolverines are 0-2 in the CFB Playoff.
