Boston College Eagles vs #14 SMU Mustangs What to Watch:
On Saturday afternoon, the Boston College Eagles will visit the No. 14 SMU Mustangs in an ACC game. Boston College is 5-4 overall and 1-3 away from home, while SMU is 8-1 overall and 4-1 at home. The programs ended last season against each other, but Sunday is their first ACC matchup since SMU joined the conference this year. Last year, Boston College won the Fenway Bowl at Boston's Fenway Park, defeating SMU 23–14. Prior to its bye last week, No. 14 SMU defeated No. 18 Pittsburgh 48–25 on November 2. Boston College just defeated Syracuse 37–31 on Saturday.
Last week, the Eagles defeated Syracuse 37-31 to end their three-game losing run. Boston College's red-zone effectiveness is largely responsible for their scoring success, as they scored touchdowns on four of their five trips inside the 20-yard line. The Eagles scored a touchdown on three of their four second-half possessions before kneeing the ball out on the last drive, and Boston College quarterback Thomas Castellanos left the game after sustaining a leg injury in the third quarter. Head coach Bill O'Brien benched Castellanos in favor of Grayson James because of the offensive success. Then, on Thursday, Castellanos declared his desire to withdraw from the program.
Last week, Boston College ran for a season-high 313 yards, with James playing a major role in their success. Jordan McDonald gained 133 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries, while Kye Robichaux ran for 198 yards and two touchdowns on 7.1 yards per carry. The Eagles can control enough of the clock to close the three-score gap if Boston College has comparable running success and ends up in the red zone.
The Mustangs' 5-0 start in their first season in the ACC couldn't be a better way to begin their ACC era. With an 8-0 record on route to an 11-3 season and a No. 24 national ranking, SMU is coming off an unbeaten season in AAC conference play.
With two wins against ranked opponents and an 8-1 start, the Mustangs have already guaranteed their sixth consecutive winning season. Most recently, on Saturday, Nov. 2, SMU dominated and led 31-3 at the half to defeat No. 18 Pittsburgh, 48-25.
The Mustangs should benefit from the rest as well because they just had a bye. Brashard Smith, a senior running back who transferred from Miami, is tied for the ACC's top five rushers with 6.5 yards per carry and ranks fourth in the conference with 906 yards. He ranks third in the ACC with 11 running touchdowns. Last week against Pitt, Smith added a receiving touchdown to his 161-yard rush total and two touchdowns. Boston College will find it difficult to contain him, which might result in a blowout victory on Saturday.
