#9 BYU Cougars vs Utah Utes What to Watch:
In their rivalry known as the Holy War, the No. 9 BYU Cougars (8-0) will take on the Utah Utes on Saturday night in an attempt to stay on course for a College Football Playoff berth. BYU, the only unbeaten team left in the Big 12, earned a bye last week after defeating UCF 37–24 two weeks prior. In the most important game of the season, Utah has the chance to turn things around as they have dropped four straight games after winning their first four. One of the four Big 12 protected rivalries that will be played annually is the Holy War.
At Rice-Eccles Stadium, kickoff is scheduled for Saturday at 10:15 p.m. ET. According to the most recent Utah vs. BYU odds, BYU is favored by three points.
Utah's bye week coincided with the reopening of the quarterback rivalry between Brandon Rose and Isaac Wilson. Two weeks ago against Houston, Wilson was benched early in the second half, but on the final play, Rose threw a late interception that allowed Houston to make the game-winning field goal. The starting quarterback will remain within the program, according to head coach Kyle Whittingham, so BYU won't know who to prepare for.
At an average of 6.0 yards per carry, senior running back Micah Bernard leads Utah's rushing attack with 782 yards and three touchdowns. The Utes have won nine of the previous ten encounters since 2010, which puts them in a unique position as underdogs in this series. They have also covered in 11 of the rivalry's last 16 editions, making them beneficial against the spread.
This season, BYU has already won four games on the road, including its most recent victory, a 37-24 victory against UCF as a 3-point underdog.
BYU's running assault amassed 252 yards and two touchdowns, while junior quarterback Jake Retzlaff had 228 passing yards and two touchdowns. An offense led by Retzlaff averages 35.1 points and 410.0 yards per contest.
In addition to being the best defensive team in the Big 12, the Cougars are tied for the most interceptions (14), and they lead the conference in takeaways (18). Four of their players have recovered a fumble, while eleven of them have registered at least one interception. Utah has only covered the spread once in its last seven games, while BYU has done it in nine of its last ten.
