California Golden Bears vs #9 SMU Mustangs What to Watch:
After both programs joined the ACC this season, the No. 9 SMU Mustangs will visit the California Golden Bears in a new ACC matchup on Saturday. California is 6-5 overall and 2-2 away from home, while SMU is 10-1 overall and 5-1 at home. The only prior meeting, in 1957, was won by the Mustangs. SMU has already secured a berth in the ACC Championship Game for next week.
The game will begin at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas at 3:30 p.m. ET. According to the most recent SMU vs. Cal odds, the Mustangs are favored by 13.5 points.
The Mustangs are currently on an eight-game winning run after defeating the Virginia Cavaliers 33–7 on Saturday. Kevin Jennings, who threw for 323 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for another, and the renowned SMU defense, which recorded nine sacks, were among the players driving the charge against UVA. Isaiah Smith and Jared Harrison-Hunte, who each had two sacks, carried the bulk of the work, and SMU was a brick wall on third down, allowing Virginia to convert just three of fifteen attempts.
Southern Methodist's offense, which scores 39.3 points per game and ranks seventh in Division I, is the team's strongest suit despite that outstanding defensive effort.
Since replacing Preston Stone, Jennings has contributed a big-play element and leads the ACC in yards per attempt and yards per completion. Brashard Smith, who leads the conference in touchdowns and ranks second in rushing yards, paces the run game in the meanwhile. Additionally, SMU has gone 6-2 against the spread during its current eight-game winning streak after failing to cover in its opening two games of the season.
Meanwhile, California barely defeated Stanford 24–21 on Saturday to secure a victory. Fernando Mendoza broke off a 50-yard run and passed for 299 yards and three touchdowns.
Jonathan Brady, a wide receiver, also made a difference with two touchdowns and 64 receiving yards. Following a four-game losing streak, it was Cal's third win in the previous four games.
The Golden Bears have the top defense in this game and are 3-1 ATS both away from home and as an underdog this season. Cal is second nationally in defensive interceptions (17), eighth nationally in total takeaways (22) and tops the ACC in scoring defense. While the Mustangs have a number of defensive weaknesses, including giving up the third-most passing touchdowns among ACC teams, Cal also protects the ball when its offense takes the field, averaging fewer than one giveaway per game.
