#17 Clemson Tigers vs #8 SMU Mustangs What to Watch:

When the No. 8 SMU Mustangs play the No. 17 Clemson Tigers in the 2024 ACC Championship Game on Saturday night, they hope to wrap up an incredible first season in the ACC with a league championship. Despite receiving none of the 170 first-place votes and being ranked seventh in the preseason polls, SMU is 11-1 overall and 8-0 in the league going into the ACC championship game. Coming off a 17-14 non-conference loss to South Carolina on Saturday, Clemson, which is 9-3 overall and 7-1 in the ACC, is participating in its ninth ACC Championship Game in the past ten years. As one of the top five conference champions, the victor is almost guaranteed a spot in the College Football Playoffs.

As one of the top four conference winners, SMU would be well-positioned to earn a first-round bye.

On Saturday, kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET from Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. According to the most recent SMU vs. Clemson odds, the Mustangs are 2.5 points ahead.

The Tigers' defense is a major factor in the fact that Clemson has gone under the total in four of their previous five games. Over the past four games, Clemson has given up 16.3 points per game and hasn't let up more than 20 points in any of those games. The Mustangs have only given up 13 points in their last two games, and SMU has also gone under in both of those contests.

With the Mustangs giving up 19.8 points per game and the Tigers giving up 21.6 points per game, SMU and Clemson possessed the ACC's top two scoring defenses this season. With conversions allowed on just 31.3% of tries, the Mustangs boast the conference's best third-down defense. At 33.7%, Clemson comes in at number four. Additionally, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney stated last week that Phil Mafah, the running back, is coping with "a little injury." That might reduce his efficacy.

Both sides may struggle to extend drives on Saturday given the importance of the match and the extra time these formidable defenders will spend preparing for one other's games.
