#12 Clemson Tigers vs #5 Texas Longhorns What to Watch:
The No. 12 seed Clemson Tigers (10-3) will play the No. 5 seed Texas Longhorns (11-2) on Saturday afternoon in their first-ever College Football Playoff home game. Texas wins a home game as a consolation prize after losing to Georgia in the SEC Championship, narrowly missing out on a first-round bye in the new expanded CFP bracket. After dropping three games during the regular season, Clemson defeated SMU 34-31 in the ACC Championship to secure the final seed in the field. In the quarterfinals, the victor of this matchup will take on Arizona State, the fourth seed.
On Saturday, Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium will kick off at 4 p.m. ET. The most recent Texas vs. Clemson odds show that Texas is currently favored by 13.5 points after opening at -11.5.
With its only defeat coming against Georgia in October, Texas concluded the regular season with an 11-1 record in its inaugural SEC campaign. The Longhorns lost to the Bulldogs in overtime in the SEC Championship, and they were unable to exact revenge. They defeated Michigan, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M, and they won ten of their other eleven games by double digits.
Leading the high-powered attack is junior quarterback Quinn Ewers, who has completed 66.2% of his throws for 2,665 yards, 25 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. Quintrevion Wisner is a sophomore running back with an average of 4.9 yards per carry, 863 rushing yards, and three touchdowns. Clemson has only once covered the spread in its last six games against SEC schools, while the Longhorns are 13-1 in their last 14 home games.
Despite suffering three defeats in a dismal regular season, Clemson's victory over SMU in the ACC title game allowed it to qualify for the College Football Playoffs. Before SMU roared back with a 17-0 run in the fourth quarter, the Tigers had jumped out to a 24-7 halftime lead.
As time ran out, they won with a 56-yard field goal and a lengthy kickoff return.
Cade Klubnik, a junior quarterback, has completed 63.7% of his throws for 3,303 yards, 33 touchdowns, and only five interceptions this season. Phil Mafah, a running back, has 1,106 rushing yards and eight touchdowns, while Klubnik has carried for 458 yards and seven scores. Under head coach Dabo Swinney, the Tigers have won 18 of their previous 19 December games hands-down. The Tigers have a clear route to keep this one under the number because the spread is now more than two touchdowns and Texas is dealing with injury issues with starting offensive tackle Kelvin Banks (ankle) and receiver Isaiah Bond (ankle).
