Duke Blue Devils vs Northwestern Wildcats What to Watch:

After leading the Blue Devils to a 26-3 victory over Elon last week with a strong defensive performance, Manny Diaz is starting his second game as head coach of Duke football. In their Week 1 triumph, Duke restricted Elon to 2.3 yards per play and recorded eight sacks; however, when they play the Northwestern Wildcats on Friday, they will be up against a more potent offense. Diaz had been Miami's defensive coordinator before taking over as head coach for three seasons.

For their third win over the Wildcats in the previous three years, the Blue Devils upset Northwestern 38–14 at home last season.

The Blue Devils have destroyed Northwestern in recent years, even with shifting players, and Duke has scored at least 30 points in each of those wins. Since 2017, Duke has defeated Northwestern 5-0, with two of those wins occurring away from home.

In recent years, Duke has evolved beyond just a basketball school. For the first time since 2017 and 2018, the Blue Devils have finished with a winning record in consecutive seasons, and their 17 victories in the previous two seasons were the most since 2014 and 2015. Last season versus Northwestern, running back Jaquez Moore had 10 rushes for 61 yards and wide receiver Jordan Moore had five grabs for 56 yards. Both of these important playmakers will return this autumn.

Another big-play option for a Duke offense hoping to maintain its recent domination over Northwestern is the acquisition of Maalik Murphy, a sophomore quarterback who transferred from Texas. Check out which team to choose here.

Northwestern's quarterback, Mike Wright, is a fifth-year senior who may be difficult to plan against due to his dual-threat ability. In Week 1 versus Miami (Ohio), Wright ran for 65 yards and a touchdown on nine rushes and completed 18 of 30 passes (60%) for 178 yards. Wright, who has a ton of college football experience, spent his first three years at Vanderbilt before transferring from Mississippi State, where he was a backup and change-of-pace quarterback the previous season.

Although Wright has the ability to improve the offense, Northwestern's defense is likely to be their strongest suit. Last season, Northwestern finished 4-0 and gave up 15 points or less in three of their four games. After Pat Fitzpatrick was sacked in July 2023 due to hazing allegations, Northwestern had to hustle to find a new head coach, and last year was David Braun's first season in that role. Throughout his career, Braun has been a defensive coach, and the Wildcats' defensive prowess was evident in Week 1 as they held Miami (Ohio) to six points and 4.1 yards per play.
