Florida Gators vs #5 Texas Longhorns What to Watch:
On Saturday afternoon, the No. 5 Texas Longhorns (7-1) will face the Florida Gators (4-4) for their first home game in three weeks. Two weeks ago, Texas defeated then-No. 25 Vanderbilt 27–24 to overcome its first setback of the season. Last week, they had a bye. The Longhorns have one conference loss, joining Georgia, Texas A&M, Tennessee, and LSU in a five-way tie for first place in the SEC standings. Despite losing to Georgia 34–20 last week, Florida, which is currently in the bottom of the standings, covered the spread. Both running back Montrell Johnson Jr. and quarterback DJ Lagway of Florida are classified as game-time decisions.
On Saturday, Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium will kick off at 12:00 ET. According to the most recent Texas vs. Florida odds, Texas is ahead by 21.5 points.
In its first six games of the season, Texas looked like the top college football team and won each one handily. Two weeks ago, the Longhorns managed to grind out a victory against an upset Vanderbilt, but they lost their first game against Georgia to end their winning run.
Before their final four games of the regular season, they had a chance to regroup with their bye last week. Now, they face a team that is without its initial starting quarterback, Graham Mertz (ACL), and maybe Lagway, who will probably be limited if he can play at all.
Quintrevion Wisner, a sophomore running back, has 409 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Quinn Ewers, a junior quarterback, has 1,389 passing yards and 14 touchdowns. After the Gators only managed 81 total yards in the second half of last week's game, Florida's offense was reduced to its third-string quarterback. Texas has covered the spread in eight of its previous 12 games, although they have already dropped seven straight games in November.
After the Gators lost two of their first three games this season, Florida head coach Billy Napier had one of the most heated seats in college football. However, the team has since shown remarkable resiliency, and athletic director Scott Stricklin said Thursday that Napier will be retained for another season. In mid-October, the Gators defeated then-No. 8 Tennessee in overtime and have now won three of their previous five games. Last week, Florida covered the spread for the fifth straight game against Georgia, ranked second.
Florida Gators was eventually unable to stop Georgia from scoring in the closing minutes of the game, which was tied going into the fourth quarter. In Week 11, Texas covered the spread only once in its final eight games, falling short of expectations as the season draws to a close.
