Fresno State Bulldogs vs #9 Michigan Wolverines What to Watch:
When the No. 9 Michigan Wolverines play the Fresno State Bulldogs on Saturday night, they will begin a new chapter in their history under head coach Sherrone Moore. During last year's Michigan national championship season, Moore worked under Jim Harbaugh, filling in as head coach for four games when Harbaugh was suspended. In the Big Ten, the Wolverines trail No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Oregon, and No. 8 Penn State. Last season, Fresno State finished 9–4 and defeated New Mexico State in the New Mexico Bowl.
Michigan, the reigning champion, brings back a number of important players from that squad to start the season. Last season, Donovan Edwards, a senior running back, ran for 497 yards and five touchdowns, including two touchdowns and 104 yards versus Washington in the national championship. Colston Loveland, a junior tight end who caught 45 passes for 649 yards and four touchdowns the previous season, will be a top target in the passing offense.
The starting quarterback for the Wolverines has not yet been revealed, but it will be either senior Davis Warren or junior Alex Orji, both of whom were leftovers from the previous campaign.
Jeff Tedford resigned as head coach at Fresno State in July due to health issues, and the team is currently led by an interim coach. The Bulldogs are 1-4 against the spread in their last five away games and only covered the spread twice in their final nine games of the previous season.
Even though Michigan is the reigning national champion, there are several factors to consider before this first game. In addition to playing under a new head coach, the Wolverines are replacing their best quarterback, running back, and wide receiver from the previous campaign. This is a lookahead spot for them since they have a big matchup against No. 4 Texas coming up next week.
Mikey Keene, the quarterback, is back as the starting quarterback for Fresno State, which finished with a 9–4 record and a victory in the New Mexico Bowl. Last season, he completed 67.1% of his throws for 2,976 yards and 24 touchdowns. Last season, sophomore wide receiver Jalen Moss caught 55 passes for 706 yards and six touchdowns, while senior running back Malik Sherrod ran for 966 yards and nine scores.
