#17 Kansas State Wildcats vs West Virginia Mountaineers What to Watch:
When the West Virginia Mountaineers take on the No. 17 Kansas State Wildcats in a Big 12 clash on Saturday night, they aim to be in a celebratory mood as they host their second consecutive top-25 matchup. West Virginia dropped to 2-2 overall and 2-1 in the Big 12 after losing at No. 11 Iowa State, 28-16, on Saturday. Avery Johnson's 50-yard touchdown pass to Jayce Brown with 2:14 remaining in the fourth quarter gave Kansas State a 31-28 victory over Colorado, improving their record to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the Big 12. The Wildcats had blown a 24-14 lead going into the fourth quarter.
At Milan Puskar Stadium's Mountaineer Field in Morgantown, West Virginia, kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday. According to the most recent Kansas State vs. West Virginia odds, Kansas State is a 2.5-point favorite.
In between a 38-9 defeat to BYU, where the Wildcats turned the ball over three times in one of those games where nothing seemed to go right, Kansas State has won two games against ranked opponents this season (No. 20 Arizona and No. 20 Oklahoma State). If Kansas State keeps turnovers to a minimum, they can win and cover this game.
Ranking sixth in running yards per game (232.6) and seventh in yards per rush (6.0), Kansas State boasts one of the greatest rushing offenses in the country. As a dual-threat quarterback, Johnson has contributed 306 yards on 51 carries, while junior running back DJ Giddens has rushed for 786 yards on 108 carries at a rate of 7.3 yards per carry. Even though West Virginia is only giving up 3.9 yards per carry (44th in college football), the four Wildcats players who have at least 15 runs this season are all averaging over 5.0 yards per carry, making this a formidable running attack to try to contain.
The fact that the Mountaineers have faced top 25 opponents, both of whom are presently ranked in the top 10, suggests that Kansas State's talent level shouldn't be shocking, even though West Virginia is 0–2 versus ranked opponents. A somewhat uncommon fifth-year senior quarterback who has played all five years at the same school, Garrett Greene, leads the Wolverines. Greene has 1,267 passing yards over six games with a higher completion rate (57%) than previous season, while throwing for 2,406 yards and 16 touchdowns compared to four interceptions. He is quite at ease with the West Virginia offensive scheme.
West Virginia will also try to use the rushing attack to control the time of possession. The Mountaineers are 33rd in rushing yards (191.6) and 16th in run attempts per game (42.4) in college football. With Jahiem White, CJ Donaldson Jr., and Greene all rushing for between 378 and 398 yards this season, they make up for their lack of a genuine explosive lead running back who can break a large touchdown run at any time. With an average of 5.9 yards per carry from White and Greene, West Virginia can easily cover the spread or possibly win outright if they can manage time of possession on Saturday.
