#23 Liberty Flames vs #8 Oregon Ducks What to Watch:
When the Ducks suited up to play for the Pac-12 title, hoping to win the conference and a berth in the College Football Playoffs, it wasn't exactly the contest Oregon had anticipated. However, following two defeats to Washington this season, they ultimately had to play Liberty in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl.
This game is very similar to last year's Cotton Bowl, where a USC team who had just suffered their second defeat of the season to Utah in the Pac-12 championship game (which also prevented them from qualifying for the CFP) played a driven Tulane squad that was eager to leave their imprint. The Trojans quickly declined in that game, which gave Tulane the opportunity to rally and win.
In this instance, Oregon is hoping that won't be the case as they take on an unbeaten and similarly driven Liberty squad aiming to establish their eligibility for a New Year's Six bowl.
With the best running game in the nation (302.9 YPG), the Flames might be in a position to accomplish that. They will enter the Fiesta Bowl having run for 441 and 393 yards, respectively, in their last two games—victories over UTEP and New Mexico State—and first-year coach Jamey Chadwell's squad has surpassed 300 yards rushing seven times. Conference USA leaders in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns this season were sophomore quarterback Kaidon Salter (1,064 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns) and junior running back Quinton Cooley (1,322 with 16 touchdowns).
The formula is straightforward if Bo Nix is involved: Continue playing the style of game that allowed them to defeat all opponents this season but Washington. Nix is in charge of Oregon's offensive, which is the nation's top-ranked unit. The defense is among the finest run defenses in the nation, but Liberty's potent running attack (302.9 yards per game) may be able to match them. The Ducks will be in a strong position to avoid the upset if they can establish the ground game, which Lanning noted they were unable to do against Washington in the Pac-12 title game. -- Uggetti Paolo
