Maryland Terrapins vs #4 Penn State Nittany Lions What to Watch:
On Saturday, the Maryland Terrapins will visit the No. 4 Penn State Nittany Lions in a Big Ten game. Maryland is 4-7 overall and 1-3 away from home, while Penn State is 10-1 overall and 5-1 at home. Including winning three consecutive games by an average of 27.7 points, Penn State has an all-time record of 43-3-1 versus Maryland.
The game will kick off from Beaver Stadium in University Park, Pennsylvania, at 3:30 p.m. ET. According to the most recent Penn State vs. Maryland odds, the Nittany Lions are 24.5-point favorites.
Although the Terrapins have lost four straight games, none of their previous three defeats were by a margin of more than 21 points. Against No. 1 Oregon, they suffered a single 21-point defeat throughout that time. The Terrapins are competing with their opponents even though they aren't winning. Maryland lost to Rutgers by 14 points and Iowa by 16 points. Before giving up the game's final 17 points, Maryland led Rutgers 17–14 in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Maryland was within six points of Iowa before giving up the game's final 10 points.
Although Penn State's ground assault is one of its strong points, Maryland has played well against the run this year.
The Terrapins are allowing 135.6 running yards per game and 3.9 yards per rush, both of which are among the top 50 in college football. When starter quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. was sidelined due to injury, sophomore quarterback MJ Morris performed well. Last week, he completed 12 of 23 yards for 103 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions against Iowa. Morris can therefore make enough plays to keep Maryland within the spread if Edwards is unable to play on Saturday.
The Nittany Lions rank sixth in yards per play (6.9) and fourteenth in yards per game (445.6), making them one of the best attacks in college football.
Penn State comes in on a three-game winning streak, averaging 36.7 points per game over that time. In two of those three victories, they covered the spread, winning by 29 and 39 points. Depending on the outcome of Michigan vs. Ohio State, Penn State could also contend for a Big Ten championship with a win. Penn State will, however, desire a spectacular win to show the College Football Playoff committee that it is among the best teams in the country, since there is a chance of a home playoff game in any case.
Despite having no interceptions in his last three games, junior quarterback Drew Allar has scored six touchdowns (five passing) and amassed 2,497 passing yards on 9.6 yards per attempt, good for second place in the Big Ten. Allar's completion percentage (72.2%) and quarterback rating (171.0) rank third in the conference. This season, Kaytron Allen and Nicholas Singleton, the running back combination, have combined for over 600 yards. Maryland might not be able to handle the Nittany Lions' offensive power.
