#24 Michigan Wolverines vs #22 Illinois Fighting Illini What to Watch:
The Week 8 college football schedule includes a Big Ten-ranked game between the No. 22 Illinois Fighting Illini (5-1) and the No. 24 Michigan Wolverines (4-2) on CBS and Paramount+. Although Michigan had last week off, they lost 27–17 to Washington in their Week 6 encounter, which was a replay of the national championship game from the previous year. That ended Michigan's 24-game conference winning streak. Last week, Illinois defeated Purdue 50-49, but as 22.5-point favorites, the Illini fell well short of covering. Michigan has defeated the Illini six times in a row and is up 72-23-2 in this head-to-head series.
At 3:30 p.m. ET, Memorial Stadium will kick underway. In the most recent Michigan vs. Illinois odds, the Wolverines are now 3.5-point favorites as the spread shifted in favor of Michigan after beginning at -1.5.
This season, Michigan has had trouble moving the ball, particularly in the air. But when the Wolverines switched to quarterback Jack Tuttle over Alex Orji in the middle of that game at Washington, they may have found some answers. With Tuttle at quarterback, Michigan scored 17 points and averaged 5.2 yards per play after Orji scored zero points and the team averaged 2.9 yards per play. Tuttle has been selected as this week's starter, but Orji is still a potent running threat, so both could return to the field.
With just 458 yards surrendered on the ground, the Wolverines lead the Big Ten in their ability to stop the run. The Wolverines should have a strong opportunity of applying pressure on Illinois quarterback Luke Altmyer if Michigan can make Illinois one-dimensional, even though the secondary has struggled more than anticipated this season.
Bret Bielema, the head coach, led Illinois to a 4-1-1 ATS record this season and was 3-2 against Michigan while he was at Wisconsin. Additionally, the Illini have overcome their three underdog appearances this season.
Illinois can take advantage of the Michigan Wolverines' obvious weaknesses on both sides of the ball. The Illini will probably be happy to air it out against a Michigan passing defense that is ranked No. 111 in the country because they don't have a particularly potent rushing attack. Illinois is in a strong position to cover or pull off the little home upset because Michigan hasn't scored more over 30 points this season, while Illinois has done so three times.
