Mississippi State Bulldogs vs #14 Ole Miss Rebels What to Watch:
When the Ole Miss Rebels (8-3) play the Mississippi State Bulldogs (2-9) in the 2024 Egg Bowl on Friday, a fierce in-state rivalry is about to be reignited. The Rebels' hopes of making the College Football Playoffs were severely damaged after their 24–17 loss against Florida. In contrast, the Bulldogs enter Friday's game limping from nine straight losses, including a 39–20 loss to Missouri the previous week. The Rebels can give Mississippi State its first winless SEC season since 2002, and they currently own the all-time series lead 65-46-6.
The game will begin at 3:30 p.m. ET at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Mississippi. The current Mississippi State vs. Ole Miss odds have the Rebels as 24.5-point favorites.
The Rebels have one of the most potent offenses in the country. Ole Miss is fourth in college football with an average of 38.5 points per game. Jaxson Dart is the offensive leader of the Rebels. Six interceptions, 24 touchdowns, and 3,732 yards have been thrown by the senior signal caller. In addition, he has amassed 99 carries for 375 rushing yards and three more touchdowns.
On the defensive end of the ball, the Rebels are quite active. This season, Ole Miss has the second-best rushing yardage average in NCAA football, allowing opponents to only muster 87.5 yards per game. With an average of 4.45 team sacks per game, Lane Kiffin's side leads the country in this category as well. Tre Harris, the team's top wide receiver, is listed as uncertain to play.
Despite losing nine of their previous ten games, the Bulldogs are 6-5 against the spread in 2024. Additionally, Mississippi State has a 4-1-1 ATS record in its previous six encounters with the Rebels. Having spent two seasons as Oxford's assistant coach, head coach Jeff Lebby is familiar with Ole Miss.
With an average of 146.9 running yards per game, the Bulldogs have a strong ground game. Mississippi State averaged 6.8 yards per play and ran for 147 yards in last week's defeat to Missouri. Against the Tigers, running back Davon Booth had 12 carries for 124 yards and a touchdown. Booth will be crucial in keeping Ole Miss' offense off the field because he is averaging 5.3 yards per rush this season.
