Mississippi State Bulldogs vs #1 Texas Longhorns What to Watch:
On Saturday afternoon, the No. 1 Texas Longhorns (4-0) will visit the Mississippi State Bulldogs (1-3) in their first conference match as SEC members. Texas defeated Louisiana-Monroe 51-3 last week and has won all three of its games this season by a margin of at least 19 points. After falling to Florida 45-28, Mississippi State has now lost three straight games. Next week, the Bulldogs will travel to No. 2 Georgia for the first of their ruthless back-to-back road games.
On Saturday, Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium will kick off at 4:15 p.m. ET. According to the most recent Texas vs. Mississippi State odds, Texas is favored by 37.5 points.
With two outstanding starting quarterbacks, Texas possesses maybe the best quarterback situation of any collegiate football team. Due to an abdominal injury, junior Quinn Ewers has missed the last 1.5 games. In relief, rookie Arch Manning has been outstanding, throwing for over 480 yards and six touchdowns in that time. According to reports, Manning will start this one again because Texas is the overwhelming favorite. He will then take the following week off before playing Oklahoma in Week 7.
With 120 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, junior running back Jaydon Blue was the standout performer in the victory over Louisiana-Monroe.
The Mississippi State defense he is playing against has given up at least 30 points in each of its last three games. The Longhorns have little issue covering big numbers and have covered the spread in seven of their last eight games.
Texas is an even stronger favorite against an SEC opponent, while only being a 35-point favorite over Colorado State in its season opener. The Bulldogs have scored at least 17 points in each of their last three games, including last week's 28-point effort against Florida. In that game, they averaged 4.3 yards per run while rushing for 240 yards and three touchdowns.
Senior quarterback Michael Van Buren Jr. will start in place of senior quarterback Blake Shapen, who is sidelined for the season due to a shoulder injury. Last week against Florida, he drove two long drives and finished one with a rushing score. Kevin Coleman Jr., a junior wide receiver who has caught 22 receptions for 287 yards and two touchdowns, has been the passing attack's main danger.
