New Mexico Lobos vs #21 Arizona Wildcats What to Watch:
When the No. 21 Arizona Wildcats visit the New Mexico Lobos on Saturday night, they hope to extend the second-longest winning run in the country, which stands at seven games. Arizona (10-3 in 2023) concluded the previous season rated No. 11 and won its last seven games, including a victory over Oklahoma in the Alamo Bowl. New Mexico, which finished 4-8 the previous season, lost to FCS Montana State 35-31 at home in Week 0 of the 2024 campaign.
Arizona Stadium will host kickoff on Friday at 10:30 p.m. ET.
The Wildcats bring back most of their successful core despite losing coach Jedd Fisch and a number of important starters to Washington during the winter.
Despite not starting until the fifth game of the season, quarterback Noah Fifita averaged over 311 yards per game and recorded 25 touchdown passes. At +4000, he is currently one of the top 20 picks in the preseason Heisman Trophy odds.
Tetairoa McMillan, a wide receiver who caught 90 passes for 1,402 yards and 10 touchdowns last season, is the real star of Arizona's offense. McMillan is regarded as one of the two best players at his position (together with Luther Burden of Missouri), and he should thrive in an offensive scheme now led by former Syracuse coach Dino Babers. Fifita and McMillian ought to have successful games and carry on the Wildcats' winning streak in Brent Brennan's first season as head coach of Arizona.
Last week, the Lobos appeared ready to defeat FCS Montana State in Week 0 after three quarters. They had a 17-point lead going into the fourth quarter, but the Bobcats took advantage of a crucial third-down to end the game. In his season debut, quarterback Devon Dampier was effective, rushing for 34 yards and a touchdown and throwing for 172 yards and a touchdown.
The New Mexico defense allowed Montana State 567 yards, including 362 on the ground, even though they recovered two fumbles for touchdowns. Jacory Croskey-Merritt, a former Lobos runner who ran for 1,190 yards and 17 touchdowns for New Mexico the previous season, is Arizona's starting running back.
This contest is made more intriguing by the fact that Arizona's linebackers coach is former UNM head coach Danny Gonzales. New Mexico needs to do far better than they did in the disappointing loss last week in order to limit the Wildcats' strong offense.
