North Carolina Tar Heels vs Minnesota Golden Gophers What to Watch:

In Week 1 of the 2024 collegiate football season, the Minnesota Golden Gophers take on the North Carolina Tar Heels. While UNC has won four of its last five games in Week 1, Minnesota has won ten games in a row in August. But both teams had trouble closing 2023 against the spread. Last season, Minnesota was 1-5 ATS in its last five games, while the Tar Heels finished 1-6 against the spread in their final seven games. Although the ACC vs. Big Ten matchup is only a taste of what's to come in Week 1 of college football, the oddsmakers anticipate a fiercely contested matchup on Thursday night.

On Thursday night, the Tar Heels are anticipated to start two quarterbacks against Minnesota.

Both signal callers have the skills necessary to lead UNC to victory on the road, but game flow will determine who stays in at quarterback. Max Johnson is a four-year quarterback with two years left in his eligibility at Texas A&M and LSU. During his four years in college, he has made 30 appearances, 22 of which were starts, and thrown for 5,852 yards and 47 touchdowns. During his time at Texas A&M in 2023, Johnson completed 62% of his passes for 1,452 yards and nine touchdowns.

Conner Harrell is also anticipated to start as quarterback for the Tar Heels in the season opener. In 2023, Harrell made his first career start against West Virginia in the Duke's Mayo Bowl and played in five games as a redshirt freshman.

He had a strong game against the Mountaineers, rushing for 75 yards and scoring a touchdown on the ground in addition to completing 22 passes for 270 yards and two touchdowns.

In 2024, Golden Gophers head coach P.J. Fleck, who is starting his sixth season, will look to quarterback Max Brosmer to spearhead his offense. After moving from New Hampshire to meet a critical need for a team coming off a 6-7 season, Brosmer is starting his sixth season of collegiate football. In addition to being second in passing yards (3,464) and passing touchdowns (29), Brosmer led the FCS in passing yards per game (314.9) the previous season.

Brosmer will be playing with a number of gifted wide receivers, such as Daniel Jackson, who was selected to the 2023 second team All-Big Ten. Jackson finished with 59 receptions for 831 yards and eight touchdowns the previous season. He will be Brosmer's first choice in dire circumstances and averaged 14.1 yards per reception.
