#18 Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs Purdue Boilermakers What to Watch:

When Notre Dame plays Purdue on Saturday in Week 3 of the college football calendar, the Shillelagh Trophy will be awarded for the first time since 2021. The trophy was first given out in 1957, and Purdue vs. Notre Dame was a yearly college football rivalry game from 1946 to 2014. They reconnected in South Bend in 2021 after a six-year break, and Purdue will host the 2024 meeting. Purdue's record versus Notre Dame is 57-26-2 overall, and the Boilermakers haven't triumphed over Notre Dame since 2007.

During the first two seasons under head coach Marcus Freeman, Notre Dame finished 19-7 and won a bowl game each year. Six of the Fighting Irish's seasons have seen double-digit victories, and they have won at least nine games in seven consecutive seasons. Although Notre Dame may find it difficult to forget last week's defeat, this year's Fighting Irish team has the potential to be among the best in the country after defeating No. 20 Texas A&M, 23–13, in College Station in Week 1.

After the Texas A&M victory, Notre Dame, which began the season at No. 7, rose to No. 5.

A strong defense is a major factor in the Fighting Irish's top-10 preseason ranking, which has dropped them to No. 18 following their home loss to Northern Illinois. One of the nation's top defensive backs, cornerback Benjamin Morrison, is in charge of Notre Dame's pass defense, which is limiting opposing quarterbacks to a 44% completion rate, which is ninth in college football.

With a 49-0 victory over Indiana State on August 31, Purdue, which is starting its second season under head coach Ryan Walters, set a season-high for scoring and recorded its most lopsided victory under Walters in just one game.

The Fighting Irish recently suffered a huge upset over Northern Illinois, a MAC team, despite Notre Dame being a major step up from an FCS institution.

With Walters spending an entire season with the Purdue program, there is greater familiarity within the program this autumn. Along with returning starting quarterback Hudson Card, he demonstrated his comfort level against Indiana State by completing 24 of 25 passes for 273 yards and four touchdowns. Devin Mockobee, who carried for 89 yards on 8.1 yards per carry in Week 1 after rushing for 807 yards with 180 receiving yards the previous season, is also back with the Boilermakers.
