#8 Ohio State Buckeyes vs #1 Oregon Ducks What to Watch:

After many detours, the eagerly anticipated rematch between Oregon and Ohio State is finally scheduled to take place in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals for the second time this season. After defeating Tennessee 42-17 in the opening round on Saturday, Ohio State advanced to the quarterfinals and will face the Ducks in the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day.

FanDuel had the Buckeyes as 1.5-point favorites at the start.

The Ducks have won the last two games, but Ohio State leads the series 9–2. In their most recent encounter, which took place in Eugene on October 12, Oregon prevailed 32–31 in a traditional back-and-forth heavyweight bout.

As Ohio State and former Pac-12 blue-blood Oregon square off on a field next to the magnificent San Gabriel Mountains, it is fitting that the Granddaddy of Them All, which nearly always pitted the Big Ten against the Pac-12, will still have that warm, vintage feel in this new era of the CFP. The winner of No. 4 Arizona State and No. 5 Texas will advance to the CFP semifinals in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl.

We anticipated a rematch in the Big Ten Championship, but the dream was dashed when Ohio State mysteriously fell to Michigan, allowing Penn State to backpedal into the championship match. Nevertheless, the rematch should be fantastic because we are in the last postseason round.

Two of the sport's wealthiest rosters and two potent offenses. Both fan bases would be disappointed if they didn't win a national championship.

There will be one team that fails. The other team will stay on course, although they are still two victories away from winning the title.

No. 1 Oregon (13-0) will have to travel a notoriously challenging path to Atlanta if it hopes to make a breakthrough and win a national championship. Only two teams since 2000 have defeated Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State—all Big Ten powerhouses—in the same season as Oregon. On New Year's Day, the Ducks have the opportunity to become the first team to defeat Ohio State twice in a single season.

With a seasoned roster lead by quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who has the FBS record with 187 career touchdowns, the Ducks are ready for the big stage. They have previously defeated three CFP opponents, although they gave up more than thirty points in each of those three wins.

In their ten other victories, they gave up 21 points or fewer. To put it simply, despite being in the top 15 of most defensive measures, Oregon's defense appears very different while playing top-10 teams. Their weakness lies in the red zone, where they rank 34th offensively and 79th defensively in the country. Despite Ohio State's spectacular performance in the first matchup and their rapid 21-0 blitz in the first quarter against Tennessee, the Ducks still need to fill in some gaps.

In the grand scheme of things, Oregon has come quite close to the summit in recent years, appearing in the top 5 of the AP polls for 87 weeks in a row, making them the most often team in the top 5 to never win a national CHampionship.

Unlike the previous meeting between the two teams, the Ducks should be close to full strength because Oregon is relatively healthy after struggling through the second half of the season with injuries to standout players like pass rusher Jordan Burch and go-to receiver Tez Johnson.

With a victory in the quarterfinals, the Ducks can move Dan Lanning into a tie with Lincoln Riley as the fastest coach in the previous 50 years to 36 FBS victories in a season filled with firsts, including a 13-0 record and a Big Ten title in their debut season. A victory would extend the bad draw for the top-seeded Ducks and set up a possible matchup with Texas in the Longhorns' home state.

Perhaps Ryan Day planned the disappointing defeat to Michigan in order to spur Ohio State to the postseason. The No. 8 Buckeyes (11-2) certainly fired out of the gate in the CFP with a fresh purpose to give Day his first playoff victory (1-3), but it is a joke. They quickly accumulated almost 200 yards before the Vols made their first throw, putting them ahead 21-0, and they didn't let up in the second half. Ohio State had previously demonstrated this deadly instinct, but it vanished a few weeks ago. Maybe the beast was roused by the agony of that terrible defeat in the regular-season finale.

Recall that in the first meeting in October, Ohio State and Oregon exchanged blows in a game that could have gone either way. Perhaps the Buckeyes, who are now playing at their best, will have the advantage given that the game will be played at a neutral location.

The offensive line, which was missing two starters, was absolutely devastating on Saturday against one of the nation's top defensive fronts, which is the greatest indication for Ohio State. Treveyon Henderson gained 7.4 yards per carry through three quarters, while Tennessee, who had been the season's sack masters, largely avoided touching Will Howard.
