Oklahoma Sooners vs Navy Midshipmen What to Watch:

On Friday afternoon, the Oklahoma Sooners will play the Navy Midshipmen in the 2024 Armed Forces Bowl. Navy is 9-3 going into the bowl season and recently defeated the Army-Navy Game in an unexpected 31-13 triumph. Despite coming off a huge upset of Alabama, Oklahoma is 6-6 and has lost five of its previous seven games. At least five Oklahoma starters, including quarterback Jackson Arnold, used the transfer portal and will be out. Safety Billy Bowman and star linebacker Danny Stutsman have chosen not to play in this game.

Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas, will kick off at 12:00 ET. In the most recent Oklahoma vs. Navy odds, the Sooners are now favored by 1.5 points after beginning at -4.5.

After winning their first conference game at Auburn on September 28, the Sooners, who had just entered the SEC, started the season 4-1. In their subsequent game, the Sooners would lose 34-3 against Texas, starting a run of four straight losses. Oklahoma did, however, earn bowl eligibility with a dramatic 24-3 upset of Alabama after regaining their winning streak with a tuneup match against Maine. In that game, Oklahoma rushed for 257 yards and shut down the Alabama attack, forcing three turnovers and allowing only 237 yards from the Crimson Tide.

Since Oklahoma recently added top-ranked portal quarterback John Mateer from Washington State for the upcoming campaign, rookie quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. is a capable replacement who will be eager to prove himself. Hawkins Jr. split time with Arnold this season, playing in six games and starting two.

For the first time since 2019, Brian Newberry led the Midshipmen to bowl eligibility. Additionally, for the first time in five years, Navy took home the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy. The gateway and opt-outs don't affect the service academies nearly as much as they do other programs, and Navy's roster seems to be fully intact for this showdown.

This season, the victories over Army and Air Force were largely attributed to quarterback Blake Horvath. Before throwing for 107 yards and two touchdowns and rushing for 196 yards and two more against Army, he passed for 134 yards and ran for 115 yards and two touchdowns against Air Force. In the game against Memphis, Horvath also scored six touchdowns. As a receiver and runner, he amassed over 1,000 yards and 28 touchdowns. The Midshipmen are 8-3 against the spread in their previous 11 games, and they have dominated games with their outstanding running assault (249.3 yards per game).
