#11 Ole Miss Rebels vs #10 Penn State Nittany Lions What to Watch:
On Saturday afternoon in Atlanta, one of the more exciting games of the college football bowl season will take place. The 2023 Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl will be played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium between the No. 10 Penn State Nittany Lions and the No. 11 Ole Miss Rebels. This season, both programs are 10-2. The Nittany Lions are accustomed to this environment, having made five trips to the New Year's Six bowl in the past decade. Penn State's losses were against Ohio State and Michigan. The Rebels are 11-4 in their last 15 bowl games, and Ole Miss is aiming for its first season with 11 wins in program history.
Under head coach Lane Kiffin, Ole Miss boasts a strong offensive unit.
Ole Miss is extremely dynamic, and the Rebels have only committed seven turnovers this season, placing them in the top three among FBS clubs. In addition to finishing in the top four of the SEC in both passing yards (276.6 per game) and rushing yards (179.0 per game), the Rebels are averaging 455.6 total yards per game this season. With very solid underlying numbers, Ole Miss has nearly 35 points per game this season thanks to that balance.
This season, the Rebels have only six interceptions, 23 passing touchdowns, and an average of well over nine yards per throw attempt. Quinshon Judkins is a strong force on the ground, and Ole Miss has 28 rushing touchdowns. Judkins has led the SEC in running touchdowns for two consecutive seasons and is the only player in program history to have 15 or more rushing touchdowns in a season, both in consecutive years. Judkins, a vital component of the Rebels, amassed 1,052 rushing yards this season.
In addition to Penn State's strong defense, the Nittany Lions have significant advantages in this game. With just six turnovers and just one offensive interception, James Franklin's team leads the FBS in turnover differential (+18) this season.
In the season finale versus Michigan State, quarterback Drew Allar threw for 292 yards and two touchdowns while averaging more than 11 yards per attempt. He also has the nation's highest touchdown pass (23) to interception (1) ratio.
Conversely, this season, Penn State leads the nation in sacks (48), yards allowed per play (3.9), and total yards allowed (223.3 per game). In terms of points allowed (11.4 per game), passing yards allowed (153.6 per game), rushing yards allowed (69.7 per game), yards allowed per rush attempt (2.2), and first downs allowed (13.5 per game), the Nittany Lions rank among the top three in the country. The Nittany Lions struggle against opponents on third down, moving the chains just 30% of the time, and Penn State has almost twice as many interceptions (12) as passing touchdowns allowed (seven).
