#8 Penn State Nittany Lions vs West Virginia Mountaineers What to Watch:
The 2024 College Football season begins with the No. 8 seed Penn State Nittany Lions traveling to play the West Virginia Mountaineers in a non-conference matchup. With a 10-3 record the previous season, the Nittany Lions were among the top teams in the Big Ten. On December 30, Ole Miss won the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl 38–25 over Penn State. Conversely, WVU had a 9-4 record at the end of the 2023 season. The Mountaineers defeated North Carolina 30-10 in the Duke Mayo's Bowl.
The Nittany Lions hope to maintain their performance from the previous season, when Penn State was among the top teams in the Big Ten.
They finished first in both running offense (185.2) and scoring offense (36.2) during the 2023 season, fifth in passing offense (215), and second in total offense (400.2). They also scored more than 40 points in five games.
Drew Allar, a junior quarterback, can throw on all three levels and has a huge arm. Allar had two interceptions, 25 passing touchdowns, and 2,631 yards of yardage. One of the best backfield choices was junior running back Kaytron Allen. Because of his stature, Allen can intimidate defenders and make it difficult to take him down. The native of Virginia recorded 5.2 yards per rush on 172 carries for 902 yards and six touchdowns. Last season, he recorded at least 70 rushing yards in six games.
Many of the Mountaineers' offensive key players are back, and they plan to continue where they left off in 2023. West Virginia led the conference in rushing offense (228.9) and finished seventh in the Big 12 in scoring offense (31.5) last season. This team has a dual-threat signal caller in senior quarterback Garrett Greene. Greene amassed 708 rushing yards, 13 running touchdowns, 2,178 passing yards, and 15 passing touchdowns.
The offensive attack was spearheaded by the ground game, and this season, it will be the strategy. They had three players that ran for 700 yards last season.
In the backfield, Jahiem White, a sophomore running back, was the key differentiator. He accumulated 7.7 yards per carry, 4 touchdowns, and 842 rushing yards. CJ Donaldson Jr., a junior running back, adds another power to West Virginia. He amassed 798 yards and a team-high 11 touchdowns in 2023.
