Rutgers Scarlet Knights vs Kansas State Wildcats What to Watch:
On Thursday, December 26, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights and Kansas State Wildcats will play in the 2024 Rate Bowl. Kansas State comes in at 8-4, having dropped three of its last four games and most recently losing 29-21 to No. 18 Iowa State on Nov. 30. Rutgers comes in at 7-5, having won three of its past four games and most recently upsetting Michigan State 41-14 on November 30. The Scarlet Knights just made their second bowl participation since 2015, while Kansas State won their third consecutive bowl game the previous season.
Kickoff is scheduled for Thursday at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, at 5:30 p.m. ET. Kansas State has a 7-point advantage in the most recent Kansas State Wildcats and Rutgers Scarlet Knights betting odds.
With a 7-1 record through their first eight games, an average of 32.8 points per game, and a national ranking of No. 13, the Wildcats got off to a scorching start to the season. Even though Kansas State lost three of its last four games, the Wildcats, who are headed by sophomore quarterback Avery Johnson and a potent rushing assault, have most of their playmakers on Thursday. Johnson ran for 548 yards and six touchdowns while throwing for 2,517 yards, 22 touchdowns, and nine interceptions.
The Wildcats will be without starting running back DJ Giddens, who declared for the 2025 NFL Draft, despite Kansas State ranking seventh in the country in yards per carry (5.6) and 19th in rushing yards per game (197.4). On 6.6 yards per carry, Giddens ran for 1,343 yards and seven touchdowns. Dylan Edwards, the backup running back, however, made good use of his opportunity, sprinting for 350 yards at 6.3 yards per carry. Kansas State also boasts a top-notch rushing defense, giving up 122.1 yards per game (ranked 27th in the US) and 3.7 yards per rush (ranked 29th).
Rutgers is surging into the 2024 Rate Bowl, while Kansas State is coming in on a negative note. Three of the last four games have been won by the Scarlet Knights. Playing away from home shouldn't be an issue in the Rate Bowl setting in Arizona, as two of those victories—31-17 at Maryland and 41-14 at Michigan State—also occurred on the road.
Kyle Monangai, the starting running back, traveled to Arizona, and it will be important for Rutgers if he plays. As the center of the offense, the senior ran for 1,279 yards and 13 touchdowns on 5.0 yards per carry. In the season's last two games, he ran for over 120 yards each time. Rutgers has stopped opponents to less than 20 points on defense in three of the previous four games, and the Scarlet Knights defense may play well now that Kansas State is missing its best rushing back.
