San Jose State Spartans vs Washington State Cougars What to Watch:
On Friday night, the San Jose State Spartans and Washington State Cougars, two undefeated teams, square off. In the yearly Apple Cup, San Jose State defeated Kennesaw State 31-10 on Saturday, while Washington State defeated Washington 24-19. The Spartans (3-0), who finished 7-6 overall in 2023 and tied for first place in the Mountain West Conference with Boise State and UNLV at 6-2, have won nine of their last ten games, with their lone defeat occurring in the December Hawaii Bowl. A year earlier, the Cougars (3-0), who finished 5-7 overall and tied for ninth place with Stanford and Arizona State at 2-7, had a 4-0 start. 3-0 against the spread in 2024 applies to both teams.
John Mateer, a sophomore quarterback, leads the Cougars. He has completed 37 of 70 throws (52.9%) in three games, resulting in 712 yards, seven touchdowns, and two interceptions. Having carried 39 times for 314 yards (8.1 average) and four touchdowns, he is also the team's top rusher. He rushed 21 times for 197 yards (9.4 average) and one touchdown in the 37-16 victory over Texas Tech on September 7. He threw for another score as well.
Kyle Williams, a senior wide receiver, is having another strong start to the season.

In the victory over Washington last week, he caught three passes for 22 yards.
Emmett Brown, a sophomore quarterback, helps propel the Spartans. He has completed 63 of 104 passes (60.6%) for 915 yards and nine touchdowns in three starts this season. He has a rating of 159.2 and has been picked off twice. Brown threw 26 of 38 throws (68.4%) for 355 yards and four touchdowns in the victory over Kennesaw State last week.
In a 42-24 victory over Sacramento State on August 29, he threw three touchdown touchdowns.
Brown has made Nick Nash, a senior wide receiver, his top target. Against Kennesaw State, the sixth-year veteran caught 17 passes for 225 yards (13.2 average) and three touchdowns. In the first game of the season against Sacramento State, he caught ten passes for 170 yards and two scores. He has 34 receptions for 485 yards (14.3 average) and six touchdowns so far this season.
