SMU Mustangs vs Virginia Cavaliers What to Watch:
On Saturday afternoon, the No. 13 SMU Mustangs (9-1) will travel to play the Virginia Cavaliers (5-5) in an attempt to secure their ACC final game berth. With a 38-28 victory against Boston College last week, SMU increased its winning streak to seven games and took a step closer to making it to the league championship in its debut ACC season. The ACC champion receives an automatic berth into the 12-team College Football Playoff, as the Mustangs are the only team in the 17-member conference without a league loss. Including a 35–14 loss at then-No. 8 Notre Dame last week, Virginia has dropped four of its last five games.
David A. Harrison III Field at Scott Stadium will kick off on Saturday at 12:00 ET. According to the most recent Virginia vs. SMU odds, SMU is favored by 10.5 points.
After playing three top-20 teams in the last month, Virginia ought to be ready for this matchup. Before defeating then-No. 18 Pittsburgh as 7-point underdogs earlier this month, the Cavaliers covered the spread as 20.5-point underdogs in their loss at then-No. 10 Clemson. Last week, they lost by 21 points against then-No. 8 Notre Dame, narrowly missing the cover as 20.5-point underdogs.
Tony Muskett, the team's backup quarterback, was a spark in the second half against the Fighting Irish, scoring both of the team's rushing touchdowns.
For the first time since the 2019 season, the Cavaliers need one more victory to guarantee bowl eligibility. While SMU has won three conference games by a margin of 10 points or less, they have covered the spread in five of their previous seven games.
As the lone program in the 17-team ACC without a league loss going into Week 13, SMU is having an amazing season as a newcomer. The Mustangs have won all four of their away games and are currently on a seven-game winning streak. In the third quarter, they fell behind Boston College, but they overcame the deficit to win 38–28.
Last week, running back Brashard Smith rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown, while quarterback Kevin Jennings had 298 passing yards and three touchdowns. This season, Smith has surpassed 1,000 yards, giving SMU's dynamic offense some balance. Virginia is 2-9 in its previous 11 November games, and the Mustangs have covered the spread in five of their last seven games.
