South Carolina Gamecocks vs #7 Alabama Crimson Tide What to Watch:
On Saturday afternoon, the No. 7 Alabama Crimson Tide (4-1) will host the South Carolina Gamecocks (3-2) in their first game since their shocking defeat at the hands of Vanderbilt. After defeating then-No. 2 Georgia two weeks ago, Alabama surged to the top of the polls, but the Commodores quickly shocked it. After losing badly to then-No. 12 Ole Miss last week, South Carolina will be looking for a similar upset. The Gamecocks haven't traveled since their Week 2 victory over Kentucky.
The game will kick off at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa at 12:00 ET. The Crimson Tide are the favorites by 21.5 points.
South Carolina's offense doesn't seem to have the same potential as Vanderbilt's, whose intricate offensive plan was able to upset Alabama's defense. The Gamecocks are throwing for the tenth-fewest passing yards per game among the top four conferences, and they only managed a field goal in their defeat to Ole Miss last week. Additionally, they have given up the most sacks in the nation (22), which is concerning given Alabama's determined defense.
Under the leadership of standout quarterback Jalen Milroe, the Crimson Tide are among the nation's top offensive teams. He contributes significantly to a rushing assault that leads the SEC in rushing touchdowns (20) and averages 194.2 yards per game.
In addition to having a standout wide receiver in freshman Ryan Williams, who has the highest yards per reception average of any player with at least ten catches, Milroe leads the nation in quarterback rating (201.2).
The Gamecocks were far more impressive in their first four games of the season, but South Carolina is coming off a 27-3 setback to Ole Miss. As 9.5-point underdogs in their only conference road game, they dominated Kentucky, led by rookie quarterback LaNorris Sellers, who completed 11 of 15 passes for two touchdowns. In the following week's 36-33 loss to then-No. 16 LSU, he also assisted South Carolina in covering the spread as a 6.5-point home underdog.
Before losing to Ole Miss, the Gamecocks defeated Akron 50-7, covering the spread as 25-point favorites. This season, Sellers has five touchdowns, 207 rushing yards, and 548 passing yards. In four of the previous five games between these teams, South Carolina has covered the spread.
