South Carolina Gamecocks vs Kentucky Wildcats What to Watch:
When they play on Saturday afternoon, South Carolina (1-0) and Kentucky (1-0) will both be hoping to open the SEC season strongly. The Wildcats just defeated Southern Miss 31-0 in a game that was canceled in the third quarter because of bad weather. Last week, South Carolina avoided a catastrophic collapse against Old Dominion by scoring a late touchdown. Although South Carolina won 17–14 last season, Kentucky has won seven of the previous ten encounters between these two teams.
At Kroger Field, kickoff is scheduled for Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET. Kentucky is currently favored by 8.5 points after starting at -6.
These teams had somewhat different season openers; Old Dominion put South Carolina to the test, while Kentucky easily won 31-0. Before the game was canceled, the Wildcats had already taken a 24-0 lead at the half and scored another touchdown early in the second half. In his first start, junior quarterback Brock Vandagriff completed 12 of 18 throws for 169 yards and three touchdowns.
On Saturday, his versatility will be useful. He also ran five times for 35 yards. Demie Sumo-Karngbaye, a senior running back, averaged 7.4 yards per carry while rushing eight times for an effective 59 yards and a touchdown. In four of their previous five home games against South Carolina, the Wildcats have covered the spread.
Despite failing to cover the 19.5-point spread in Week 1, South Carolina managed to defeat Old Dominion. Quarterback LaNorris Sellers ran the game-winning touchdown from three yards out after the Gamecocks committed a late turnover.
Having some game experience will be very beneficial for Sellers, who is an exciting freshman.
In that game, he sprinted for 68 yards and a touchdown, which helped cover up his lackluster passing performance. Raheim Sanders, a transfer running back from Arkansas, is a formidable force in the backfield, and head coach Shane Beamer ought to open up the playbook more in Week 2. Last year, Kentucky only covered the spread once in its last six SEC games as it struggled against league opponents.
