Syracuse Orange vs #25 UNLV Rebels What to Watch:
Barry Odom quickly made positive changes to the UNLV football program. Prior to last season, as the Rebels were coming off their eighth consecutive losing season under three different head coaches, UNLV hired Odom, who was Arkansas' defensive coordinator, as head coach. However, Odom guided UNLV to a 9-5 record the previous season, and this year the Rebels are 4-0 and, for the first time in the program's history, rated in the AP Top 25. In a non-conference game on Friday, No. 25 UNLV takes on Syracuse (3-1). Last week, Syracuse defeated Holy Cross 42–14, and this season, the Orange are 1-3 against the spread.
On Friday, Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas will kick off at 9 p.m. ET. According to the most recent UNLV vs. Syracuse odds, the Rebels are currently 6-point favorites after starting at -4.
With a 3-1 record, the Orange are off to a quick start under first-year head coach Fran Brown. With the arrival of Kyle McCord, who spent his first three seasons at Ohio State and was ranked as the 10th-best quarterback in the transfer portal by 247Sports, Brown immediately shown his ability to attract elite players from the transfer portal.
The Buckeyes won their first 11 games before falling to Michigan 30-24 in the last regular season game and missed the College Football Playoff the previous year. McCord completed 65.8% of his passes for 3,170 yards, 24 touchdowns, and six interceptions.
Syracuse has thrown on 63.8% of plays, the third-highest proportion in NCAA football, which shows how committed they are to the McCord-focused offense. The senior has thrown at least 330 yards in each of the four games, including three four-touchdown efforts, and the Orange are averaging the third-highest passing yards per game (358). Syracuse had at least one interception in three of its four games this season and is only giving up 5.8 yards per pass, which is 18th in college football.
On Friday, McCord can guide Syracuse's offense to stay up with UNLV, giving the Orange a strong chance to cover the score or possibly win the game.
For the first time in its history, UNLV is included in the AP Top 25, and the team is trying to put the off-field concern of quarterback Matthew Sluka redshirting because of a disagreement over NIL money behind it. Hajj-Malik Williams completed 13 of 16 passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 119 yards and a score in the Rebels' 59-14 victory over Fresno State last week, proving they could win without Sluka despite their 3-0 record with him.
With its highest point total against an FBS program since 2016, UNLV appeared to be a squad trying to make an impression.
With 20 receptions for 253 yards and five touchdowns, including 10 receptions for 127 yards and two touchdowns last week, senior wide receiver Ricky White III leads UNLV. He has contributed significantly to UNLV's passing performance this season, accounting for 54.1% of all receptions. With an average victory margin of 51.5 points this season, the Rebels have limited every opponent to 14 points at home.
