Temple Owls vs #16 Oklahoma Sooners What to Watch:
The No. 16 Oklahoma Sooners will meet the Temple Owls on Friday night to begin their 2024 season as an SEC member. Despite having a more challenging schedule than in previous years, Oklahoma, which finished 10-3 the previous season, hopes to improve and earn a spot in the enlarged College Football Playoff this year. Under third-year head coach Stan Drayton, Temple, 3-9 in 2023, is looking to qualify for their first bowl game since 2019. With only ten starters returning from the previous campaign, the Owls will face a difficult task.
In addition to quarterback Jackson Arnold, who threw for 361 yards in the team's bowl game loss to Arizona, Oklahoma has seven offensive starters back.
With the addition of former Purdue wide receiver Deion Burks and the return of five of the team's six best receivers from 2023, Arnold should have no shortage of weapons. Despite losing offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby to Mississippi State as head coach, the Sooners shouldn't have any trouble scoring points.
The Sooners had two second team All-Americans on defense: safety Billy Bowman and linebacker Danny Stutsman. Last season, Bowman was the team's third-leading tackler with 63, while Stutsman had 104. Oklahoma has eight defensive starters back, including their six top tacklers.
The Owls are up against a powerful and seasoned Oklahoma club, and they only have 10 returning starters.
Returning running back Joquez Smith and Maryland transfer Antwain Littleton will spearhead the rushing assault. With an offensive line that is above average, Temple will need to handle the ball to keep the Sooners off the field on Friday.
Forrest Brock, a 2023 JUCO transfer who played in one game the previous season, is probably going to be selected at quarterback instead of Evan Simon, a transfer from Rutgers. Five defensive starters are back, and they hope to outperform the club from the previous season, which allowed 442 yards per game, including 198 on the run.
