#9 Tennessee Volunteers vs #8 Ohio State Buckeyes What to Watch:

The Tennessee Volunteers travel as the ninth seed to play Ohio State, the eighth seed, in the first round of the College Football Playoffs on Saturday. The Vols never qualified for the four-team CFB playoff field and last won a national championship in the 1998 season under the BCS system. They won 10-2 this year thanks to a strong defense, and now they'll play Ohio State, a team that was vying for a top seed and a bye before losing to Michigan in the regular-season finale. Josh Simmons and Seth McLaughlin, Ohio State's two starting offensive linemen, will be sidelined by injuries.

All of the Tennessee Volunteers' starters are still with the team, despite the fact that seven players are listed on the transfer portal.

Ohio Stadium will host kickoff on Saturday at 8 p.m. ET, with a temperature of about 25 degrees predicted for kickoff. According to the most recent Ohio State vs. Tennessee odds, the Buckeyes are favored by seven points.

Despite Josh Heupel's reputation as a high-octane offensive coach going into the season, Tennessee has been carried by its defense. The Vols have one of the deepest defensive lines in the country and finished second in the SEC in both scoring and total defense.

They allowed less than 100 rushing yards per game, and Will Howard and the Ohio State passing offense would be under a lot of pressure if they were to match that performance.

This season, the offensive proved threatening despite its inconsistencies. Dylan Sampson, a running back, had one of the most successful seasons in school history (256-1,485-22). The Buckeyes will need to focus on him, which might lead to enough big passing plays from Nico Iamaleava, a good redshirt freshman quarterback, and receivers Dont'e Thornton, Squirrel White, and Bru McCoy to at least cover, if not win, the game.

The Buckeyes are stocked at almost every position, as is customary, and a Tennessee team lacking experience on this stage may find it impossible to overcome the skill advantage and home-field advantage. The Vols had a 4-0 start against the spread, but they frequently struggled from an ATS perspective, finishing only 3-5 against the number.

This season, Tennessee has lost twice on the road (to Georgia and Arkansas), while the Vols have won the majority of their signature victories in Knoxville under Heupel. After losing to Michigan, the Buckeyes should be as focused as ever, so don't expect the Vols to catch Ohio State off guard.
