#8 Tennessee Volunteers vs Vanderbilt Commodores What to Watch:
On Saturday afternoon, the No. 7 Tennessee Volunteers (9-2) will take on the Vanderbilt Commodores (6-5) in an attempt to avoid their third straight road defeat. The Vols are in a position where they probably need to win in order to qualify for the College Football Playoffs after losing to Georgia and Arkansas on the road in their last two games. After an incredible run in October, Vanderbilt has lost three of its last four games, but it has already guaranteed its bowl eligibility. The Commodores covered the spread in their loss to LSU last week and have won three games this season despite being double-digit underdogs. DeSean Bishop, Tennessee's second-leading rusher, is expected to make a comeback this game after missing the game on November 2 due to an unspecified injury.
FirstBank Stadium will kick off on Saturday at 12:00 ET. According to the most recent Vanderbilt vs. Tennessee odds, Tennessee is favored by 10.5 points.
This head-to-head series has generally been dominated by Tennessee, but Vanderbilt has won several games by a wide margin in the past ten years and has covered the spread in nine of the previous twelve encounters. The Commodores, who have won four games as at least 8-point underdogs, are also having their finest season in recent memory. In early October, they defeated then-No. 1 Alabama at home as 23-point underdogs, their largest victory of the season and their first ever over a top-ranked team.
With 2,029 passing yards, 671 rushing yards, and 22 total touchdowns this season, senior quarterback Diego Pavia has been causing problems for opponents. In addition, he covered the spread against LSU last week and guided Vanderbilt to victories over Virginia Tech, Kentucky, and Auburn. Vanderbilt has covered at a 9-3 clip in its last 12 games since the previous season, while Tennessee has only covered the spread twice in its last seven games.
Tennessee's only defeat in that run came two weeks ago against then-No. 12 Georgia. Tennessee has won five of its last six games to move within one victory of a probable College Football Playoff spot. Nico Iamaleava, a rookie quarterback, completed 17 of 23 throws for 209 yards and four touchdowns as the Vols overcame UTEP 56-0 last week. Dylan Sampson, a junior running back, contributed 77 rushing yards and a touchdown to help Tennessee close the 41.5-point deficit.
This season, Sampson has averaged 5.7 yards per carry while rushing for 1,309 yards and a school-record 22 touchdowns. Senior Bru McCoy has 35 receptions for 432 yards, and senior wide receiver Dont'e Thornton Jr. has 22 grabs for a team-high 529 receiving yards and four touchdowns. The Vols have defeated these opponents 56-0 in Nashville two years ago, and they have won five of their last five matchups.
