Texas Tech Red Raiders vs Washington State Cougars What to Watch:
On Saturday night in Pullman, the Washington State Cougars will visit the Texas Tech Red Raiders in an attempt to begin the 2024 campaign 2-0. The Red Raiders defeated FCS Abilene Christian 52-51 in overtime, while the Cougars defeated Portland State 70-30 to start the 2024 campaign. Texas Tech won both games in their most recent meeting, which took place in 1963–1964.
The 539 yards the Red Raiders gained in their close victory over FCS Abilene Christian showed how well their attack is already performing. In the victory, Behren Morton, the quarterback, completed 30 of 42 passes for 378 yards and five touchdowns. Josh Kelly (10-156-1) and Coy Eakin (5-76-2), two of Morton's best receivers, were outstanding and feasted on the Wildcats' defense.
Tahj Brooks, a senior running back, had an incredible 2023 season, accumulating 1,443 yards on the ground and scoring nine touchdowns. He had another outstanding start to the 2024 season. To provide the Red Raiders with a well-rounded assault, Brooks ran for 153 yards and a touchdown on 27 touches. Will Texas Tech's defense get better after letting Abilene Christian gain over 600 yards last week, even though they should have no trouble scoring a lot of points this season?
After putting on a strong offensive show against FCS Portland State, the Cougars should be able to defeat the Red Raiders defense, which had a terrible game the previous week.
Against the Vikings, Cougars quarterback John Mateer was 11 of 17 for 352 yards and five touchdowns. Along the way to the club scoring 49 points in the first half, he also added two rushes for 55 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown.
The Portland State secondary was dominated by receivers Kyle Williams (4-141-2) and Kris Hutson (4-101-1), and running back Wayshawn Parker ran eight times for 96 yards and a touchdown. Given how well their offense was performing, the Cougars might have been able to score nearly 100 points if they hadn't let up. They gained 637 yards overall last week, so they should be thrilled to take on a defense that allowed more than 500 yards in throwing last week.
