Tulane Green Wave vs Charlotte 49ers What to Watch:

On Thursday night, the Charlotte 49ers play the Tulane Green Wave in an attempt to end a two-game losing run. Charlotte's record is 3-5, with a 2-2 record in the AAC. The 49ers' 55-24 victory over East Carolina on October 5 as 9-point underdogs has been the high point of their season. Tulane, meanwhile, has a 29-7 record overall since the 2022 season began, including a 19-1 record in the AAC. The Green Wave have won five straight going into Thursday's matchup and are 6-2 this season.

The game will kick off from Jerry Richardson Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, at 7:30 p.m. ET. The most recent Charlotte vs. Tulane odds see the Green Wave as 15-point favorites.

With a 4-0 record and an average victory margin of 27 points, the Green Wave have dominated AAC competition this season. Makhi Hughes, a sophomore running back who has ran for over 115 yards in four of his previous five games, is driving Tulane to victory. With 167.5 yards in his last two games, Hughes is averaging 117.4 rushing yards per game. Last week against North Texas, the quick 5-foot-11 back ran for 195 yards on 30 carries at a rate of 6.5 yards per rush and scored a touchdown.

Tulane is 10th in terms of running yards (213.3 per game) and rushes on 64.5% of plays, which is the fourth-highest percentage in NCAA football.

Since redshirt freshman quarterback Darian Mensah isn't much of a runner, those running back carries are mostly choreographed. In his last four games, he has averaged three rushes per game. In what looks to be a difficult game for the 49ers, Charlotte is ranked outside the top 100 in almost every defensive rushing statistic, including 118th in running yards allowed per game (203.6).

This season, Charlotte has had trouble moving the ball consistently, but the 49ers are among the most effective teams in the country at scoring points once they get inside the 20-yard line. Charlotte ranks 40th in college football in terms of scoring on red zone opportunities, with an 88.9% completion rate.

If Charlotte can take advantage of a few red zone possessions, they could be able to cover the margin on Thursday against Tulane, who have a spread of more than two scores.

The 49ers have already equaled their win total from the previous two seasons, despite Charlotte having only one winning season in its last nine years. That indicates that the program has improved in Biff Poggi's second season as head coach. Charlotte is 2-1 since September 28 besides a 51-17 defeat to No. 25 Navy. Its only defeat was to Memphis, who led by five points with less than two minutes left. The 49ers can keep up with Tulane on Thursday because Charlotte has averaged 30.3 points in their last four games.
