UCLA Bruins vs #7 Penn State Nittany Lions What to Watch:
On Saturday afternoon, the UCLA Bruins (1-3) will travel to play the No. 7 Penn State Nittany Lions (4-0), their third consecutive trip against a ranked team. UCLA has suffered three consecutive defeats by a margin of at least 17 points, including a 34–13 loss to then-No. 8 Oregon last week. Penn State defeated then-No. 19 Illinois 21-7 to complete a four-game homestand. This is the first time these legendary programs have met since 1968. Nicholas Singleton, a running back for Penn State, is rated as doubtful.
Kickoff at Beaver Stadium is scheduled for 12:00 ET. According to the most recent Penn State vs. UCLA odds, the Nittany Lions are currently 28.5-point favorites after beginning at -26.5.
With 12 of its last 18 games covering the spread, Penn State continues to crush weaker opponents in this kind of matchup. Following a 21-7 victory against then-No. 19 Illinois last week, the Nittany Lions have now won 11 of their previous 12 home games. Despite giving up an early touchdown in that game, they scored 21 points in a row to end the game.
After the Illini concluded with 34 rushing yards, their defense gave up just 219 yards of total offense, improving their run defense to ninth in the nation. With just 57 running yards per game this season, UCLA ranks close to the bottom of all FBS offenses.
Penn State will be able to increase their lead throughout the afternoon because the Bruins will not be able to control the game's pace on Saturday.
Since UCLA's last two games were against then-No. 16 LSU and then-No. 8 Oregon, the school has accumulated experience playing against top opponents. The Bruins covered as 24-point underdogs against Oregon and covered the 21.5-point spread in their defeat against LSU. This is a trap game on the schedule because Penn State just defeated a ranked Illinois team and will soon play No. 11 USC.
Senior quarterback Ethan Garbers, who is rated as doubtful, has surpassed 280 yards versus LSU with 808 throwing yards and three touchdowns.
T.J. Harden, a junior rushing back, just finished with 53 yards versus Oregon, his finest performance of the season. In their last six Saturday games, Penn State has only covered the spread twice.
