UNLV Rebels vs Kansas Jayhawks What to Watch:
The Kansas Jayhawks and UNLV Rebels both entered Week 3 of the college football season in the "others receiving votes" section of the AP Top 25 and both will have a great opportunity to impress voters in front of a national audience on Friday night. UNLV will visit Kansas in one of only two Friday games on the Week 3 college football schedule and this will be a rematch of a high-scoring matchup at the 2023 Guaranteed Rate Bowl. Kansas won that matchup 49-36 but is 1-1 in 2024 coming off a loss to Illinois last week while UNLV is 2-0 with wins over Houston and FCS opponent Utah Tech.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on Friday at Children's Mercy Park in Lawrence, Kan., where the home team has won six of its last eight games.
After defeating Lindenwood to start the season, the Jayhawks, who were ranked No. 22 in the AP Top 25, rose to 19th place. However, following a fierce 23-16 road loss to Illinois last week, they left. Although Lance Leipold's team did outperform the Illini in the game (319–272), Kansas lost because of a 4–1 deficit in the turnover fight.
Devin Neal has now surpassed 100 yards in both games this season after rushing for more than 100 yards in the defeat. Neal has now carried for 3,290 yards and 35 touchdowns in his career, and he has hit 1,000 rushing yards in each of the previous two seasons.
Last bowl season, he had 71 yards and a touchdown in the victory over UNLV, and on Friday, he'll probably be a key player for Kansas once more.
In Barry Odom's first season as head coach, the Rebels just finished with nine wins, the program's first since an 11-win campaign in 1984 that was later canceled. After his success in Las Vegas, standout freshman quarterback Jayden Maiava went for USC, but Ricky White, the program's top receiver, has returned. Last season, White finished with 88 receptions for 1,483 yards and eight touchdowns, including seven for 97 yards and a touchdown versus Kansas.
The versatile playmaker Jacob De Jesus is also returning to UNLV, and he will play a significant part on Friday. In the bowl loss to Kansas, De Jesus added 40 rushing yards and a touchdown on six carries in addition to his eight catches for 98 yards. Despite UNLV's easy victories over Utah Tech and Houston this season, De Jesus has already scored twice. The Jayhawks are just 2-4 ATS in their last six games as favorites, while UNLV has covered the spread in its previous seven road games.
