#12 Utah Utes vs #14 Oklahoma State Cowboys What to Watch:
In Saturday's clash between the No. 12 Utah Utes and the No. 14 Oklahoma State Cowboys, two 3-0 teams playing their Big 12 openers, two of college football's most seasoned coaches will guide their top-15 ranked teams. After the 2024 season, Urban Meyer departed Utah to become the head coach of Florida, and Kyle Whittingham, now in his 20th season, took over as head coach. Whittingham has 17 winning seasons at Utah and a record of 165-79 (.676). In his 20th season at Oklahoma State, Mike Gundy is 169-79 (.681), having also taken over for the 2005 campaign.
At 4 p.m. ET, the game will begin at Boone Pickens Stadium. According to the most recent Utah vs. Oklahoma State odds, the Cowboys are favored by one point.
After winning 10 games in consecutive seasons, Utah went 8-5 for its 10th consecutive winning season despite suffering serious injuries at almost every position last season, including missing the entire season due to a knee injury sustained by starting quarterback Cameron Rising in the Rose Bowl the previous year. In addition to losing linebacker Lander Barton, running back Micah Bernard, tight end Brant Kuithe, wide receiver Mycah Pittman, and edge rusher Logan Fano for several weeks, Rising's injury may have been the most serious.
After missing last week, Rising (hand) is doubtful, but all of those guys are returning this season. Although it's an ailment to keep an eye on before the game, reports say he should participate. With 274 yards and a touchdown on 6.7 yards per carry, Bernard leads the team in rushes, and Kuithe leads the club in receiving yards (142) and three touchdown receptions. The Utes might defeat a ranked opponent on the road for the second time in as many seasons on Saturday if Rising is healthy and active.
The Cowboys, who have scored at least 39 points in each of their first three games, recently defeated Tulsa 45–10.
Oklahoma State has one of the top passing offenses in the nation and ranks eleventh in college football in terms of scoring (42 points per game). After Alan Bowman, who is in his ninth season as a collegiate football player, the Cowboys rank fourth in pass attempts and third in passing yards (378.5 yards per game). Before moving to Michigan for the 2021 season and then joining Oklahoma State for the most recent campaign, Bowman started his collegiate football career at Texas Tech in 2018. After completing 60.7% of the throws in the previous game, Bowman has increased his completion percentage to 67% this season. He is also averaging 322.3 passing yards per game this year as opposed to 247.1 yards per game the previous year.
The Cowboys rank 11th in the nation for opposing scoring percentage within the 20-yard line, giving up points only 55.6% of the time, making them one of the best red zone defenses in the nation. Despite giving up 500 yards per game, which is 119th in the nation, Oklahoma State's scoring defense is ranked 54th thanks to their "bend but don't break" approach. Red zone defense can make a big difference in what should be a competitive game. If Oklahoma State prevents Utah from reaching the end zone after lengthy drives on Saturday, the Cowboys can increase their home record to 23-2, including 7-0 against ranked opponents, since the 2021 season began.
