UTEP Miners vs Nebraska Cornhuskers What to Watch:
With Nebraska freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola making his debut, the Nebraska Cornhuskers' season opener against the UTEP Miners will be eagerly awaited nationwide. He is a highly regarded recruit who signed with Nebraska after previously committing to Georgia. After finishing 5-7 the previous season, the Cornhuskers need Raiola to have a strong season. After a 3-9 campaign the previous year, UTEP is in full rebuild mode and has hired Scotty Walden as their next head coach to succeed Dana Dimel.
Under head coach Matt Rhule, Nebraska is on the right track, and he has his future quarterback. Raiola is the nephew of offensive line coach Donovan Raiola and the son of former Husker All-American center Dominic Raiola.
Senior wide receivers Isaiah Neyor and Jahmal Banks—the latter of whom transferred from Wake Forest—are his primary targets.
Two returns from the previous season, sophomore running back Emmett Johnson and junior running back Gabe Ervin Jr., lead the rushing attack. After finishing 11th in the country in total defense, Nebraska will have a solid defense this season. The Cornhuskers have defeated Conference USA opponents five times in a row and are 11-3 in their previous 14 August games.
Only twice did Nebraska, a club that has been overpriced for a number of years, cover the spread in its final nine games of the previous campaign.
It appears like bettors will have to pay a fee to support the Cornhuskers on Saturday, as they have only covered once in their last six home games. Despite having a season that concluded with a coaching change, UTEP covered in five of its last six games.
Scotty Walden, the Miners' 34-year-old coach, is a dynamic young man. His wide-open, quick-paced offense will put Nebraska's defense and conditioning to the test. Along with a returning starting quarterback from the previous season, Walden was able to add a number of good receivers via the transfer portal.
