Washington Huskies vs #6 Penn State Nittany Lions What to Watch:
On Saturday night, the Washington Huskies and Penn State Nittany Lions will play a Big Ten matchup. After losing to Ohio State 20–13 on Saturday, Penn State is still reeling from its first defeat of the year. However, despite being No. 6 in the inaugural College Football Playoff Rankings this season, Penn State was still placed in the top 12. The defeat dropped Penn State to 4-1 in the Big Ten and 7-1 overall. Washington improved to 5-4 and 3-3 in the Big Ten after defeating USC 26-21 on Saturday.
On Saturday, the game will kick off at Penn State's Beaver Stadium at 8 p.m. ET. According to the most recent Washington vs. Penn State odds, the Nittany Lions are 13 points up.
Last week, the Huskies defeated USC 26–21 to end a two-game losing run. Washington's defense, which forced three interceptions, was crucial to the win. With 12 tackles, two interceptions, and two pass deflections, senior linebacker Carson Bruener was a game-changer. As a linebacker with a possible NFL future, he leads the defense in tackles (67) and interceptions (three), and it was his second consecutive game with more than ten tackles.
Junior Jonah Coleman, who has been one of the Big Ten's most powerful runners this season, ran for 104 yards and two scores on 23 attempts during the victory. Coleman has the second-highest average of the top five running backs in terms of total rushing yards (6.3 yards per carry) and is fourth in the conference in terms of rushing yards (889). In nine games this season, he has run for at least 80 yards in seven of them, including five 100-yard efforts. Last week against Penn State, Ohio State's running backs ran for 149 yards on 24 runs, averaging 6.2 yards per carry. Washington will try to duplicate that performance.
Against No. 4 Ohio State, the Nittany Lions led 10-0 in the first quarter before losing 20–13, their eighth consecutive defeat at the hands of the Buckeyes. Fortunately for coach James Franklin, who has a 1-10 record against top-five teams in his time as head coach of Penn State, Washington is neither Ohio State nor a top-five club. However, Penn State is coming off consecutive seasons with at least 10 victories, and Franklin is 94-30 against teams outside the top five for a.758 victory percentage.
With a 35-28 victory in the 2017 Fiesta Bowl, Penn State has a 3-0 record versus Washington in program history. That season, Franklin served as the head coach. This is a completely different Huskies team, especially without quarterback Michael Penix Jr. (Falcons) and head coach Kalen DeBoer (Alabama), despite the fact that Washington made it to the National Championship Game the previous season. With an outstanding defense that can cause Washington problems on Saturday, Penn State boasts the seventh-best scoring defense (15.0 points per game) and the sixth-fewest yards allowed (279.0 per game).
