Western Kentucky Hilltoppers vs James Madison Dukes What to Watch:
When the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers play the James Madison Dukes in the 2024 Boca Raton Bowl on Wednesday, teams hoping to finish the season strong will square off. Both clubs have an 8-4 record going into Wednesday's matchup. Despite making it to the C-USA Championship Game, WKU lost to the Jacksonville State Gamecocks 52–12. The Dukes, on the other hand, enter this game limping from two consecutive losses, including a Nov. 30 loss to Marshall in double OT, 35-33.
At FAU Stadium, kickoff is scheduled for Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. ET. The most recent James Madison vs. Western Kentucky odds show that James Madison is currently favored by 7 points after beginning at -3.
Despite having already entered his name in the transfer portal, quarterback Caden Veltkamp is scheduled to play in Western Kentucky's bowl matchup with James Madison. Veltkamp threw for 2,806 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions during his successful season with the Hilltoppers. He was selected the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year in large part because he is completing 66.6% of his passes and has thrown two or more touchdown passes in six of his previous nine games.
The Hilltoppers defeated Appalachian State in 2021 and Memphis in 2016, giving them a 2-0 record in the Boca Raton Bowl. Alonza Barnett III, the starting quarterback for James Madison, will also be sidelined due to an injury sustained during the regular-season finale versus the Thundering Herd.
Billy Atkins, who is making only his second career start, will be the next player the Dukes turn to. In 2022, Atkins made his lone other start versus Marshall, throwing four interceptions in a home defeat.
The Dukes boast a dynamic offense that is very difficult to defend, despite their quarterbacking issues. This season, James Madison is scoring 33.8 points per game on average, good for 24th place in the country. Leading the Dukes' ground game is running back George Pettaway. During the regular season, the sophomore tailback hauled in 148 passes for 880 yards and five rushing touchdowns. With Barnett III out, he will probably play a big role in James Madison's game plan. He averaged 5.9 yards per rush.
Western Kentucky's defense, which ranks 129th in college football, has struggled to stop the run this season, allowing 221.9 running yards per game. Furthermore, Western Kentucky is 1-4 against the spread in its last five games, while James Madison is 15-5 in its last 20 games when playing as the favorite.
