#6 Penn State Nittany Lions vs #3 Boise State Broncos What to Watch:

Penn State is progressing in the College Football Playoffs for the first time in the program's history. With a resounding 38-10 victory over (11) SMU on Saturday, the (6) Nittany Lions secured their spot in the Fiesta Bowl quarterfinal on December 31 against (3) Boise State.

Thanks to a strong defensive effort, Penn State dominated the game from the first kickoff. SMU's opening offensive drive was stopped when the Nittany Lions stopped them on fourth-and-one at Penn State's 19-yard line. Then, Penn State linebacker Dominic DeLuca returned an interception 23 yards for the game's first touchdown on SMU's subsequent possession.

It was the first of two first-half pick-sixes for Penn State's defense and the first of two interceptions for DeLuca. Over the first two quarters, the Nittany Lions scored 21 points thanks to turnovers. After stuffing SMU on another fourth down conversion attempt, they scored their fourth touchdown.

Penn State led 28-0 at the half, and the victory was straightforward after that. At this point, the Nittany Lions focus on a formidable Boise State squad.

The two illustrious programs will meet for the first time.

The Broncos, who were formerly a New Year's Six regular, played well enough as Mountain West champions to earn a first-round bye under first-year coach Spencer Danielson, and Boise State and Penn State both stand in the top 10 in all-time victory %.

Boise State, which defeated UNLV 21–7 in the Mountain West Championship Game, is riding an 11-game winning streak into the College Football Playoff. This season's sole loss for the Broncos? On the road, they lost to top-seeded Oregon by three points.

Boise State has been riding Doak Walker Award-winning running back Ashton Jeanty all year, which is no mystery how they got to 12-1.

It doesn't matter how teams stack the box to get ready for the assault; Jeanty has been destroying defenders all season long on his way to becoming a finalist for the Heisman Trophy.

Jeanty leads all FBS players in total yards rushing with 1,882 yards after contact. His career forced missed tackle percentage is 37.1%, and he averages 4.8 yards after contact per rush. Once he reaches space, he can burn past defenders with his speed, making it nearly impossible to knock him down on first contact.

But it hasn't all been Jeanty. With a 62% completion rate and 22 touchdowns to just three interceptions this season, quarterback Maddux Madsen has been among the country's most effective signal callers.

He has taken use of his opportunities, but Jeanty makes his job easier.

Boise State's defense has also held its own several times this season, despite its inconsistencies. The Broncos have limited their previous three opponents to fewer than 20 points, and they haven't given up more than 24 points in a single game since October 5.

The Big Game On Saturday, James (Franklin) lived up to the nickname as his Penn State squad easily defeated a terribly outmatched SMU club to win its first-ever College Football Playoff. Although the Nittany Lions have nearly made an impact this season, it was their first true signature victory of the year (they did defeat a strong Illinois team 21–7).

They lost both games by a total of 15 points to Oregon and Ohio State, two top-10 teams, the latter of which was in the Big Ten Championship Game. With a 13-point fourth quarter, Penn State, like Boise State, drove the Ducks to the limit but lost when quarterback Drew Allar threw an interception on a drive that might have tied the game late in the fourth quarter.

Allar has played some of his best football this season under new offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki, despite that and his generally poor performance against the Mustangs. He completed 69.1% of his throws going into Saturday's game, which is about 10% more than in 2023, for 2,894 yards, which is another career high, and 21 touchdowns.
