Florida State vs Virginia Tech 2000 What to Watch:
The 2000 Sugar Bowl, which took place at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans on January 4, 2000, was the official Bowl Championship Series (BCS) National Championship Game for the 1999 NCAA Division I-A football season. The Virginia Tech Hokies, representing the Big East Conference, lost to the Florida State Seminoles, representing the Atlantic Coast Conference, 46–29. With the victory, Florida State won their second national championship in team history and the 1999 BCS national championship.
While over 18.4 million Americans watched the game on ABC television, an estimated 79,280 people attended the event in person. The resulting television rating of 17.5 was the third-highest ever for a college football game in the BCS. Tens of thousands of supporters from both clubs attended the event, and many of them used scalped tickets to get in.
Virginia Tech was given the ball to start the game, which started at 8 p.m. EST. Florida State scored first and capitalized on a blocked punt for a touchdown, giving the Seminoles a 14–0 lead in the first quarter even though Tech made progress down the field. Florida State scored two early touchdowns to start the second quarter, but Tech responded with a touchdown drive of its own before the quarter ended.
Before halftime, Virginia Tech scored a touchdown, but Florida State led 28–14 at the halfway point. With two touchdowns and a field goal in the third quarter, Virginia Tech's offense put the Hokies ahead. Tech led 29–28 at the end of the third quarter after missing two two-point attempts. But Florida State responded in the fourth quarter, scoring a score and making a two-point conversion early in the quarter to take a 36–29 lead. The Seminoles continued to hold the lead after this, adding another touchdown and a field goal to increase it to 46–29.
Florida State wide receiver Peter Warrick was selected the game's most valuable player for his efforts. Even though Tech lost, a number of its players took home postseason honors, including Michael Vick, who won an ESPY for his efforts in the regular season and Sugar Bowl. After graduating, a number of players from each club joined the NFL after being chosen in the 2000 NFL draft or subsequent iterations of the selection process.
