Iowa State Cyclones vs #21 Iowa Hawkeyes What to Watch:
On Saturday afternoon, the Iowa Hawkeyes and Iowa State Cyclones will resume their Cy-Hawk Series rivalry. The Hawkeyes have dominated this rivalry in recent years, and this will be the 71st meeting in the series' history. Iowa has defeated Iowa State seven times in the last eight games, including a 20–13 triumph in Ames last season. Iowa State defeated North Dakota 21-3, while Iowa is fresh off a 40-0 victory over Illinois State in its first game.
At 3:30 p.m. ET, this game begins at Kinnick Stadium. The Hawkeyes are favored by 2.5 points.
Last season, Iowa's defense was among the most stifling in college football, allowing just 14.8 points per game, which was the fourth-fewest in the country. In the season opener, the Hawkeyes defeated Illinois State 40-0 while pitching a shutout. Jermari Harris recorded the team's lone interception, and defensive lineman Aaron Graves ended with three sacks in the victory.
Cade McNamara was a very successful offensive player, throwing for three touchdowns and 251 yards. Reece Vander Zee, a wide receiver, caught five catches for 66 yards and two touchdowns, making him the first Iowa player to record multiple receiving scores in a game since 2020. Kaleb Johnson, a running back, finished with 119 yards on 11 runs and scored two rushing touchdowns.
Iowa State boasts a highly skilled receiving corps that can immediately support defenses. Jaylin Noel, a wide receiver, ranks fifth in Iowa State history with 172 career catches, including a team-high 66 last season. The Cyclones' wide receiver Jayden Higgins is a big-play danger. Last season, he finished with 214 receiving yards versus Memphis, which was the second-highest total in Iowa State history.
On the defensive end of the ball, the Cyclones are also quite talented. Last season, Jeremiah Cooper tied a program record with five interceptions. Last season, Myles Purchase finished T-4th in the FBS with 15 passes defended. Purchase had the most passes defended in a season of any Iowa State player since at least 2005 season.
