#19 Miami Hurricanes vs Florida Gators What to Watch:
On Saturday afternoon, the No. 19 Miami (FL) Hurricanes will play their first rivalry game of the season against the Florida Gators. Miami's last victory in The Swamp occurred in 2002, and the team hasn't been to Gainesville since 2008. The Gators will travel to Miami the following season, therefore this is the first game of a home-and-home series. The Gators won a season opener in Orlando in 2019, the last time these teams faced each other.
Ben Hill Griffin Stadium will host kickoff on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET.
With head coach Billy Napier on the hot seat going into the season, Florida needed to start the season well.
Graham Mertz, the Gators' quarterback, is returning this season, giving them an accomplished offensive captain. Limiting errors is crucial in a season opener, as he threw for 2,903 yards, 20 touchdowns, and just three interceptions the previous season.
After supporting Trevor Etienne the previous season, senior running back Montrell Johnson Jr. takes over as the starting quarterback. While wide receiver Eugene Wilson III returns after receiving 61 catches for 538 yards and six touchdowns, Johnson ran for 817 yards and five touchdowns in 2023. Florida is 5-2 in its past seven games versus ACC opponents and 13-4 in its previous 17 home games.
With an 8-1 record in its last nine games in August, Miami has started off to a good start in recent seasons. With hopes of winning the ACC and making it to the College Football Playoffs, the Hurricanes start the season ranked in the top 25. Cam Ward, their new quarterback under center, is a Heisman Trophy contender who transferred from Washington State.
Last season, Ward completed 66.7% of his throws for 3,732 yards and 25 touchdowns. He has a strong supporting group that includes returning wide receiver Xavier Restrepo and Oregon State running back Damien Martinez. Florida is 3-8 against the spread in its last 11 home games and only covered the spread once in its last five games of the previous season.
