#7 Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs #20 Texas A&M Aggies What to Watch:
One of the most anticipated games on the Week 1 college football schedule is the No. 7 Notre Dame Fighting Irish's trip to College Station to play the No. 20 Texas A&M Aggies. Since Riley Leonard, the quarterback for Duke's 2023 football team, will be starting at quarterback for Notre Dame, both clubs have a close relationship with that team. In the meantime, Jimbo Fisher was replaced at Texas A&M by Mike Elko, the former head coach of Duke.
Watts is one of the nation's top defensive players and a member of the Fighting Irish. The 6-foot, 203-pound Watts had 52 tackles and led the country in interceptions (seven) during the previous season. He was voted a unanimous first-team all-American and won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy as the country's top defensive player for his efforts last season.
Riley Leonard is another dual-threat quarterback for Notre Dame. Leonard, who passed for 1,102 yards and three touchdowns in just seven games for Duke last season, was one of the best quarterbacks available in the transfer portal after that season.
In addition, he ran for four touchdowns and 352 yards. He was one of three FBS quarterbacks to record over 2,900 passing yards and 695 rushing yards two years ago. Check out which team to choose here.
The most significant injury to the Aggies during the previous season was to quarterback Conner Weigman. Weigman, a five-star talent in the 2022 recruiting class according to 247Sports, played in just four games before his season was cut short by a foot injury. The Aggies may have greater quarterback stability now than they did during the Fisher era thanks to his healthy return this season.
Rueben Owens suffered a lower-body injury during camp, which cost the Aggies his season, but they still have a number of reliable options. Last year, juniors Le'Veon Moss and Amari Daniels each got about 100 carries. To add seasoned depth, NFL Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith's son, E.J. Smith, transferred in from Stanford.
