#3 Texas Longhorns vs #10 Michigan Wolverines What to Watch:
Initiatives involving College Football When the No. 10 Michigan Wolverines (1-0) welcome the No. 3 Texas Longhorns at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, they will be vying for a spot in the playoffs. Michigan recently defeated Fresno State 30-10 in Week 1. The Wolverines were dominant on defense but were lethargic on the offensive end of the ball during the victory. Texas wants to improve on their resounding 52-0 victory over Colorado State in the first game of the season. The Texas defense held the Rams to only 192 total yards in the victory, and Quinn Ewers threw for three touchdowns. The lone meeting between these historically significant programs was in the 2005 Rose Bowl, which Michigan won thrillingly 38-37.
When it comes to experience, the Longhorns have an advantage in this game. Ewers was one of 15 returning starters for Texas going into the season. Ewers led Texas to its first-ever College Football Playoff appearance in 2023. The former five-star recruit ran for 75 yards and five scores and completed 69% of his passes for 3,497 yards, 22 touchdowns, and six interceptions. Isaiah Bond, a former wide receiver for Alabama, was also added by Texas to the transfer site.
In NCAA football, Texas boasts one of the best offensive lines. Kelvin Banks Jr., an offensive tackle who is generally considered to be a top-10 choice in the NFL Draft, was one of the four starters the Longhorns brought back up front.
Michigan's defensive front will put Texas to the test, but Texas might have an advantage due to its experience.
Sherrone Moore is the new head coach of the Wolverines, but the program managed to keep things consistent, which is uncommon when a coach changes. Between 2018 and 2023, Moore worked under Jim Harbaugh. In 2023, he was the Wolverines' interim head coach while Harbaugh was suspended. In addition to adding veteran NFL coach Don "Wink" Martindale as defensive coordinator, Moore was able to retain a large portion of Michigan's staff.
In 2024, Michigan's defensive unit should not lag far behind its 2023 ranking as one of the nation's best. All-conference, perhaps All-American performers include safety Makari Paige, linebackers Ernest Hausmann and Josaiah Stewart, and defensive tackles Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant. The headliner of this group is cornerback Will Johnson, who is probably going to be selected in the early first round of the NFL Draft.
