#23 USC Trojans vs #13 LSU Tigers What to Watch:
In Sunday's Vegas Kickoff Classic game at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, the No. 23 USC Trojans will kick off their first season as Big Ten members with a high-profile clash versus SEC powerhouse LSU, marking the beginning of a new era. Miller Moss, a junior quarterback who threw for 372 yards and six touchdowns in the Trojans' victory against Louisville in the Holiday Bowl, will be the team's leader. The Tigers, who start the season ranked 13th in the nation, are predicted to have one of college football's most potent offenses. Kyren Lacy could be the next great wide receiver at LSU, and Garrett Nussmeier takes over at quarterback for the Tigers.
With Matt Entz taking over as linebackers coach and associate head coach for defense, and D'Anton Lynn taking over as defensive coordinator, the Trojans' defensive scheme will be completely new. After building one of the best defensive teams in the now-defunct Pac-12 at UCLA, Lynn comes over. In 2023, Entz served as head coach of FCS powerhouse North Dakota State.
In 2024, USC anticipates being active on the offensive end once more. Miller Moss assumes the quarterback position, and his familiarity with Lincoln Riley's scheme should make the move easy. Moss threw for 372 yards and six touchdowns in USC's victory over Louisville in the Holiday Bowl, his only start of the 2023 year.
The Tigers might have the top offensive line in the SEC with four returning starters. The loss of 2023 Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels and his top two wide receivers, Brian Thomas Jr. and Malik Nabers, will be lessened by their experience up front. In his fourth season with the team, Garrett Nussmeier, the new starting quarterback, has shown promise in his games. He threw for 395 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception in the Tigers' bowl game versus Wisconsin, demonstrating his skill.
The USC defense, which finished close to the bottom of NCAA football in the most of key statistical categories in 2023, will face up against LSU's explosive offense. Although the Trojans reorganized their staff, it is unrealistic to expect them to become a top defensive club in a single offseason. With their skilled and seasoned offensive line, the Tigers should have no trouble rushing the ball.
