Boise State Broncos vs #7 Oregon Ducks What to Watch:

One of the top matchups in Week 2 of the 2024 college football season will take place on Saturday night when Oregon hosts Boise State. Despite having near misses in Week 1, the Broncos and Ducks both won and will be hoping for a boost in play on Saturday.

Boise State has an opportunity to secure an early grasp on that berth if it can defeat Oregon on the road. The highest-rated Group of 5 champion will receive one spot in the new 12-team CFB Playoff. Last week, the team led by coach Spencer Danielson defeated Georgia Southern 56-45, led by 267 rushing yards by running back Ashton Jeanty.

Boise State's prospects of earning a G5 team's CFB Playoff place aren't necessarily harmed by a defeat in Eugene, but a strong performance here or a tight loss could make a difference on the margins.

In Week 2, Oregon hopes to perform better overall, much like Boise State. The team led by coach Dan Lanning unexpectedly allowed Idaho to stay around before winning 24–14. Despite outscoring the Vandals 487 to 217, the Ducks had trouble at the line of scrimmage and missed a few possessions in Idaho territory. Oregon's first performance was concerning for a team hoping to qualify for the CFB Playoffs and be considered for the Big Ten title, but with 11 games left, there is little reason to panic.

Danielson's team will not be intimidated by the challenging environment in Eugene, even if Boise State hasn't triumphed over a power conference opponent since 2019. Playing in Washington last fall gave the Broncos recent experience in a difficult environment, but faith alone won't triumph on Saturday night.

Jeanty must be the first step on Boise State's road to victory. The Broncos need to have a strong showing if they hope to win, as the preseason All-American regularly outplayed Georgia Southern with big plays on the ground last week.

Oregon has new defensive linemen who are still getting used to Lanning's defense, but Jeanty will probably have a harder time on Saturday night than he did in Week 1.

Maddux Madsen was strong last week after defeating Malachi Nelson for the starting quarterback position this autumn. Although the Ducks have a strong secondary, a few transfers are switching to the new defense, and Boise State needs more from Madsen to win. Madsen needs to win this game with his arm and a strong group of receivers, including Cam Camper, Latrell Caples, Chris Marshall, Prince Strachan, and tight end Matt Lauter, if Jeanty is kept in control.

Lanning's team should take note of last week's near-miss against Idaho. A couple extra days for new faces to become comfortable on both sides of the ball should help the Ducks, along with increased urgency and a cleaner game in Week 2.

Against Idaho, transfer quarterback Dillon Gabriel completed 41 throws for 380 yards and two touchdowns. His top receiving targets were tight end Terrance Ferguson (seven), Tez Johnson (12 receptions), Evan Stewart (three), and Traeshon Holden (three). Georgia Southern was able to move the ball through the air (322 yards) last week, and the Broncos completed the season ranked ninth in the Mountain West for pass efficiency defense.

Gabriel should have an opportunity to surpass 300 yards once more and lead the offense in his second start thanks to that combination of stats.

Boise State must not only fight Gabriel's precision but also deal with the Ducks' deep group of talent players. Oregon's backfield, which consists of Jordan James and Noah Whittington as a one-two punch, should be a nightmare for the Broncos, who gave up almost 135 yards (134.8) on the ground last season, in addition to the receiving targets already mentioned. Additionally, if guard Matthew Bedford can recover from his injury, there is hope that the offensive line problems that beset this squad in Week 1 will be resolved.
